Evergreen International's SH-3 is Built for Combat



Introduction: Looking back into the archives earlier this year, I couldn't believe it'd been at least ten years since I've fished and written about an Evergreen International crankbait. That bait, the Wild Hunch, is one president and founder, Toshiya Hashimoto's favorites because, as he shared with us, it just catches fish. Who doesn't like to catch fish? This past year saw me gravitating back towards more conventional tackle in an effort to do just that, and with that effort, I felt it was well past time to check out another bait from Evergreen International's catalog. Here's a look at a relatively new bait made for skinny waters, the Shallow Hawg 5, or SH-5 for short.

Nice to see the Wild Hunch get a mention again — Hashimoto-san's "it just catches fish" line is the same thing Japanese bass guys say about it, and it's still one of the cheapest Evergreen baits on the used market over there.

Since a lot of the Evergreen catalog never gets a US SKU, here is what Evergreen gear is actually asking on the Japanese secondhand marketplaces right now (pulled and stock-checked this morning, 11 September 2026, so read these as a snapshot, not a permanent price):

Baits — a used Wild Hunch was listed at 700 yen (about $4.83), a new-in-package Kicker Eater SP in #108 Ghost Ayu at 799 yen ($5.51), and a Super Sledge C.B.S. at 800 yen ($5.52). Evergreen plugs in the 500–1,000 yen band are the norm there, not the exception.

Rods — Combat Sticks are where it gets interesting for the price of a mid-range US stick: a Combat Stick SCSS-66M at 5,500 yen ($37.95), a Tactics TR/FR TCSC-74X at 7,700 yen ($53.13), and a first-generation CSC-65M Warrior (the Katsutaka Imae model) at 8,680 yen ($59.89). Cosmetics vary a lot at those numbers, so read the seller photos, but the blanks themselves are the same ones that never got a US SKU.

Two practical notes for anyone tempted: (1) neither Mercari Japan nor Yahoo! Auctions ships outside Japan, so you need someone in Japan or a proxy/forwarding service — and the honest cost of that is a flat 300 yen per Mercari item plus the international leg; (2) baits are the cheap thing to import because the first weight band swallows them — economy air to the US quoted $17.44 for a parcel anywhere from 60 g up to 350 g this week (10–20 days), so one crankbait costs the same to ship as six, and rods are the thing to be careful with (tube length vs. courier limits, as I mentioned in the Destroyer thread).

Has anyone here actually fished the Shallow Hawg 3 vs the 5 on the same water? Curious whether the smaller one hunts as wide as the review suggests the 5 does.
