Surf Casting Reel ? :)

Post by Ngoles » Sun Oct 01, 2006 7:48 am

Hi guys, I do A LOT of surf casting... I am thinking of buying a new reel... actually I use an Abu Garcia 6501 C4 ( I like left handed models ), but I want a better reel that cast better and leave the Abu as a backup when I go fishing.

I cast from 65 grams to 100 grams

Would you guys be kind enough to recomend me something better under the 150 US

BTW: I live in south america and I mostly do Flounder fishing ( this fish go from 500 grams to 15 kg , the most common ones are 1kg - 3kg )

I think that reel is to big for me,

The cardiff or the record sound pretty nice, I will try to find some reviews of them.

I like the Abu 6500 C3CT blue yonder and the Penn 525 T Mag. You really can't get anything better those 2 reels when it comes to surf casting. It definately falls into your price range, though the 6500 is about 10-15 more than what your willing to spend.

I looked at the abu 6500C3 CT blue yonder and the penn . They look great, but they don't carry any level wind, wich is a problem for a young fisherman like me :(

The 7000 narrow spool looks very cool, its kinda powerful ( 4.0:1 ) but that seems to be too slow for me , I think its also kinda heavy

Are there any surf reel for left handed and with levelwinds?

Have you ever tried using a reel without a levelwind? Maybe you should try it. I have never used a reel with a levelwind before. I think its obsolete, and just one more part to care for. I've heard that clearing a birdsnest is much tougher for levelwind reels. Try a non-levelwind reel for a day or two and it will feel like second nature to you. Plus reels without the levelwind can gain you an extra 20 yards.

I forgot your last question. The abu 7001 is a lefty but probably too big for your taste. Are you left handed? I'm left handed but prefer using right hand reels.

O am I am your opossite :P , I am right handed and preffer to use left handed reels..

The thing that I like of the levelwind, is that I need to retrieve all the time when I am fishing (flounder fishing is like that here), and its actually easier to fish for me with a levelwind, mainly to be more comfortable
