Daiwa stops production of Alphas 103!
Daiwa stops production of Alphas 103!
Hey All! Maybe I'm late on this one but it appears Daiwa has ceased production of the Alphas 103. Brooklyn Bill has confirmed this as well as Plat's site. The Type F takes its place I guess. That beautiful Irridescent Finish is now a thing of the past. Perhaps it will be a collector's item someday.

huh I wonder why? The F from what it seems doesnt have CRRB bearings in it so whats the use for those who want to use it in salt? Maybe something new is coming out.

From what I hear the Zillion has CRBBs. So, maybe Daiwa feels the Zillion is the suitable replacement for saltwater use?

Re: Daiwa stops production of Alphas 103!
Huh . It's a good thing i got one for myself! My hypothesis, the alphas 103 may well be "the" ultimate all round reel that daiwa had unintentionally produced and marketed, in that fishos who got the Alphas 103 uses this reel for all round fishing, from finesse, medium-heavy, fresh/salt water, etc. The alphas has got a very high drag rating to weight ratio, which is light yet offers 4kg drag. All types of lure/bass fishing can be done with the Alphas 103. It weighs the same (at 180 grams) as the first generation magnesium TD-Z. The Zillion may be the replacement for the Alphas but it will never be as light. the Alphas 103 might had affected the sales of their magnesium reels and possibly other salt water reels from daiwa as well. In one way, who would bother getting a saltwater model when the alpha is more than capable? now, with the Alphas type-F, without the CRBB, it's solely meant for freshwater use only and that fishos would need to fork out money for daiwa's "millionaire bayard" type saltwater baitcasters.

I have one of the 103's left. I guess I need to hang on to this one.

Guys, I was able to find a NIB 2003 Orange Pixy recently so I imagine they will stay fairly available for a few years to come anyway.

Thats true Mhood.
I dont understand the Zillion as a replacement for the Alphas considering not only the weight diff. but also the diff. in the gear ratio/ipt. It seems that other than the pixy it would be hard to find a daiwa reel that is less than a 6.3:1. Maybe I am missing some reels? The TD-Z custom was availiable in 5.7:1 but i cant find one left handed at all let alone in that ratio. Just thinking out loud and the baitmonkey is bugging me to buy more !!

Re: Daiwa stops production of Alphas 103!
sorry guys, but it won't be missed over my way. Not as smooth as most Shimanos. I'll take my 1000MG's over them any day!

I've been meaning to pick one up too but like mhood said there will be plenty to be had for a while.

Would be cool if they used that color for the pixy next year.
