THE Crocodile Man, Steve Irwin, is dead

Post by JIP » Sun Sep 03, 2006 10:16 pm

Sad...

------------------------------

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said.

It appeared that he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest, Queensland Police Inspector Russell Rhodes said.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occurred.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

Mr Irwin was killed just after 11am, Eastern Australian time.

It is understood he was killed instantly.

A source said Mr Irwin was already dead when his body was brought onto the Isle.

A source said Mr Irwin's body was being airlifted to Cairns Hospital in North Queensland for formal identification.

An Emergency Services Response Management spokeswoman said they received a call about the tragedy at 11.11 am, Australian Eastern Standard Time.

The response unit left in a helicopter for the Batt Reef at 11.18am and arrived shortly after.

Mr Irwin was pronounced dead at the scene immediately, the spokeswoman said.

I am sad, but not surprised. What Steve did was incredibly dangerous even though he made it look easy at times. Nevertheless, he understood the risks and died doing what he loved most - and that is not always the worst tragedy that can befall us.

I salute his bravery and dedication.

We are still in disbelief here in Australia, it's just aweful news. He was a great Australian, some thought he was over the top but I thought he was great. He will be sadly missed.

One of Steve's finest episodes was when he demostrated the dangers of Rattlesnakes in the Maryland/Pennsylvania area. I mean...we commonly think of Rattlers as a hot-climate, western-American Phenomenon, but I can promise you that the Rattlers in the colder Northeast are even worse than we have them here in Texas, or elsewhere. The reason is cattle - the ranchers blow Rattlers away before they even become a threat.

Not so in the Northeast mountains which are free from cattle and where they live in abundance - and densely! I've seen it. Steve was really brave and probably saved a lot of lives with that one particular episode. I respect that!

Man that sucks. :(

When I read the title I thought he was killed by a croc or gator, but a stingray? That's crazy. :?

The worst thing about this tradgedy is the whole world know`s about his death before his wife who is treking a mountain in Tasmania. That`s the internet for you. :(

The hardest thing to believe is he was taken out by a stingray. When he has played with some of the worlds deadliest snakes, crocs and sharks.

The coroner has made a press release. They have viewed the video footage of the attack and it was ruled as a freak accident. Steve did not interfere with the animal or provoke it, it any way.
