Steez 103 original

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Steez 103 original

It's 6.3. Do you think it would be a good reel for frogs?

It wouldn’t be my first choice with the 6.3 gears and if it has the stock 80mm handle.

Heavy cover frogging or open water/sparse cover?

As much as I dig the OG Steez 103/105, it ain't meant for froggin' in any gear ratio...least not for any enduring period of time without incurring significant wear and tear. If you want a reel from this era, the TD Fuego, OG Zillion will likely serve you better. For a Steez, the A version Gen I and II and the Morethan variants.

Also, I would choose at least 7.1 or higher gear ratio if available.

I'll probably get a Steez A either new or older in a 7 gear ratio

The biggest reason that an OG Steez isn't a great frog reel is the aluminum drive gear, it won't hold up well to winching anything out of cover. If you could find a brass gears set for it, that would help but you'll still be stuck with a slower than optimal IPT.

Steez EX gears are brass and go up to 7.9 and will also drop into a Steez Limited SV 105 8.1...I have an Ian tuned one that is also very modded, still not my first choice for frogs. Also, OG Zillion 7.1 brass can be modded to fit a Steez EX SH, I used to own one modded by Spankey from Tackle Trap, but sold it a few years ago.

All true facts, except those are all later larger gearbox models, not the original small gearbox model the OP is probably asking about.

Correct, the OG Steez 100SHA with a set of brass steez ex gears would-be your best bet. It was the first frame with the larger gearbox, the same frame that all the later steez iterations are based on, up until they changed the frame, starting with the 2016 Steez sv tw.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Yup, agreed. And to compound the confusion a little more, not to mention irritating us lefties, the 100SHA is a large gearbox version while the 100SHL is the small gearbox version. Consider my feelings hurt 😂😂

Yep on both...just stating that there are brass gears available for the Gen 1 Steez, but only the higher gear ratio models with the larger gear box frame.

Daiwa kinda flipped the script on the Steez RH/LH vs the TDZ, whereas on the TDZ LH had available compatible 7.1 gears and the RH didn't .
