What do you use to seal cork handles?

Post by SSS » Sat Feb 13, 2021 7:23 am

Got myself a megabass triza, and need some cork sealant. I tried to get the U-40, but can't find it anywhere, and shipping from the US is too expensive. Is there any other options that do the job?

I use reduced/cut Spar Urethane/Varnish. Cut it 50-50 with Mineral Spirits, coat the cork well, then smooth it all out with a Scotch Bright Pad/400 sand paper when it's dry. I don't get the slickness of using U40 when my cork gets wet. Seems to hold the filler in better also. YMMV, Brian.
Are you fishing or aimlessly casting around?

I would just get the u40, try and get a group of guys together that needs it.

Many of the other ways don't age well

This! One 2oz bottle goes a long, long way.

I use a thin layer of this rod varnish. It dries with a bit of texture so the cork stays grippy.

I use U40 Cork Sealant on every single cork rod I get, from a Racing Design to a cheap panfish spinning rod. It is a great product and one bottle will seal more cork rods than most tackle shops have in stock!

Another vote for U40. Awesome product that last a long time.

Ever since i made this thread, i got the Kelly's Cork Renew, and its meh. That thing made my rod handle look whiter than normal.

I use U-40, maybe check with Tackle Warehouse and see what they would charge on shipping.

You can also use fast drying polyurethane made by minwax.
I've never tried it since I use U-40 but I have heard others really like it.
