Let’s talk about Grass
Let’s talk about Grass
I love to see a green yard but I refuse to put my money in the ground. Environmentally speaking I think all the chemicals people use to make their lawns look so fantastic is harmful in some way to the environment. I look at it like supplements, what your body doesn’t use you will get the excess out in your urine. Just my opinion I have no data to support that. Still I cut my yard and just today the wife and I did our neighborhood walk and wow some people’s grass was like amazing. Like the kid in school who always seemed to get 100 on every test. Needless to say my yard is ok but nothing like a few of the yards I’ve seen. My grass is green but theirs is crayola green.
So I I may ask how much time do you spend in the yard greening it up?
I can buy a new reel for what it cost some people to have their yards so Luscious. Now I’m not knocking them are anyone else I find it amazing but just not something I can commit to doing.
I just dropped a dozen crickets in my boat by accident and it’s been chirping all night.

When I first saw this thread yesterday, I honestly thought it was a 4-20 thing.

I don't get the allure of a golf course lawn. Many of our waters are **cked in part due to runoff of fertilizers, weed killers, etc. Most of my lawn is clover and that's fine by me. Bees are in bad shape everywhere and need all the help they can get, the clover is theirs for the taking. If we lose the bees we're screwed. I'm the furthest thing from a granola eating tree hugger, but we're doing a piss poor job of looking after things, especially the water.

Honeybees and earthworms are not native to North America. Bumblebees are native to North America.
I agree about the overuse of fertilizers, pesticides and weed killers.

Definitely agree with comments against fertilizer. There are ways to make a yard look great without it, but it takes a lot of work that most people don’t want to waste their time with. Shade is an easy one. Plant a few trees/bush in strategic places to cut off some of the sun from scorching your grass during certain times of day. A good sprinkler system here in FL is a must, and the heads need to overlap correctly. With a good timer your grass should never get to dry. Type of grass is a big one though. Some grasses don’t like much sun, while other types do just fine. Lots of things to think about, and lots you can do.

I think the majority of fertilizer pollution, and also insecticides, come from commercial farms and ranches. While I'm sure residential use is also a factor, just look at the volume of these chemicals used in agriculture.
