NRX 854c vs Megabass FMJ

Post by MCROUT14 » Mon Jan 13, 2020 11:23 am

Found a killer deal on 2 Core 50mg7s so I'm in the market for a new jig rod- upon doing some research these 2 rods (and the 894) were mentioned A LOT. But I never really found a true comparison of the 2. I mainly throw 1/2oz jigs and mainly stick to 1ft-15ft but will occasionally fish bluff banks as deep as 25ft-30ft. I rarely do much dragging in deeper water which is why I don't think the 894 would be best although I hear it is the best stick in the lineup. Most of the time I'm trying to make specific casts and throwing my jig at the bank around laydowns/bank cover so I feel the 7'1" will help with accuracy. The lifetime warranty of the NRX is also very appealing over the 3-year Megabass warranty. Can anyone else offer some info comparing these 2 sticks before I "pull the trigger"?

Maybe the 873 as its in-between the 854 and 894?

The core 50s might not balance too well on those rods.
I can't speak for the NRX but I know it won't be balanced on the FMJ.
The FMJ needs a heavier reel to feel good.
With the core 50 the FMJ will be very tip heavy.

Appreciate the info but I’m not too worried about balance- I can always buy the butt caps and add weight.

I own a NRX 894, GLX 854 and owned an FMJ. I can't make a direct comparison between FMJ and NRX 854 but I think I can help ya out. I can say that the FMJ has a 1/2 click more power than both the nrx894 and glx854 which have similar power. It's seems to be a common opinion that the NRX 854 is a half click less power that nrx 894 and glx 854. I like a bit stouter rod than most but thought the FMJ was ideal for a 1/2oz jig. If you like a bit softer rod I would go GLX 854, I think the nrx 854 is probably underpowered for what you seek.
