Opinions on best Dobyns rod for jigs

Post by SapperTyler » Tue Nov 19, 2019 3:43 pm

I’m lookin a 7’-7’4 Dobyns for throwing 3/8-1/2 jigs in open water to light brush. There’s no price range....

From experience, I think you'll be ok with a 4 or 5 power. If you're running braid to leader like me, the 4 power works fine. If fishing straight fluro or mono, the 5 power would be better. Personally I use the Champ Extreme 784, but any of the 7'3 -7'5 models are good to go.

I've heard the xstasy rods were a bit disappointing, so I would recommend the HP 744.

Question for the questioner
If there’s no price range WHY are you looking at Dobyns?

I heard the 803 is a good stick in the HP
But if I were you I’d truly look elsewhere

I’m not insinuating that more money is a better rod ( perhaps maybe)
But there are other rods in the same price point or lower that maybe better
Such as the H3

I picked up a Sierra 735 a while back because I was curious about the line and I will say I really enjoy fishing with that rod. Its light, balanced, and to me, the sensitivity is better than I expected (more than the Champions I have fished in the past). Very versatile as well. Hope that helps.

I'll give a nod to the Extreme 744. Bump up to the 745 if you're going to be in weeds and wood.

I have both Xtasy 754 and 755 great rods. Compared to my buddies 744 champ extreme just a bit more power from a 754 to the 744. I like the f7ll cork handle but I think it’s an option for the 744 as well.

Dx745
My personal favorite is DX795

If money wasn’t a issue, I’d look past dobyns. I went thru 2 generations of the extreme lineup b4 I decided to stop tryin to beat that dead horse. Sensitivity is my #1 thing I look in a jig rod and it just wasn’t there. My suggestions are nrx, zbone, steez ags or evening the new steez bottom contact rod in that order.

I really like my Dobyns rods but if your looking for the most sensitive rod get a NRX. The NRX 893 is a sweet rod for 3/8 oz jigs but if your going 1/2 oz get the NRX 894. I love my DRX 723C for skipping 3/8 jigs. Haven't tried the 754 or 755 yet.
Thanks for the epiphany captain obvious

I agree with what you said 100%
I think the new bottom contact rod will deliver

If you're staying with Dobyns, go with the Xtasy, I have the 755, works well with 3/4 and up. The tip seems a little slower, so I have to put some smoke on it for a solid hookset, but the fish stay pinned.
