Curado 70 discontinued?

Post by ss30378 » Tue Oct 22, 2019 9:10 am

Dan,

Are the 70s being discontinued or are they being upgraded or replaced? I see MAP has been removed.

I was thinking they were going to be upgraded possibly... also Tackle Warehouse has had them on clearance/closeout for the last couple weeks!

I dont really think the need for the CU70/71 is worth it IMO. With having the SLX available is the many styles they have come out with, why even bother in that price range. Ive had the SLX and the CU70, and I thought the SLX was a better feeling reel overall.

The 70 is more finesse orientated with the smaller and lighter spools. The diameter is also smaller.

The Curado 70 is what I was talking about. The spool diameter is still smaller on the 70 which helps with smaller and lighter lures. Weight is one component, spool diameter is another. Push a car with different tire sizes. The one with smaller diameter is much easier to get moving than the one with the taller tires.

No, what I was saying is there is the SLX MGL to take the place of the CU70/71 reels. With the SLX being soo popular, I could see why they would possibly discontinue the CU70/71 in favor for the SLX MGL reels.

That being said, Im sure the spool specs for the CU70/71 are about the same as the SLX MGL. Thus my reasoning.

I hope Shimano does not discontinue the Curado 70!

It's one of my all-time favorite reels.. I have nothing against  SLX MGL... I think the Curado Palms better and has a slight casting distance advantage over SLX MGL.

Also X-ship is important to me... ball bearing count is also higher on the Curado 70.... the 70 Curado is slightly less weight.

I was really hoping  Shimano would add Micro module gearing to the Curado 70 and a MGL spool and leave the rest alone!!

To be perfectly fair if they only changed it to a MGL spool it would certainly limit the users ability to use it in saltwater to which the Curado namesake is predominantly most known for. As for micromodule gears couldn't care less for them full stop... Otherwise the little Curado 70 is really grown on me in the last year or so it's definitely got better ergonomics form and feel than the SLX, it's definitely grown on me within regards to light lure casting in which I've turned it into a dedicated BFS reel.

Let's hope they only improve on it or at least take up the K's design aesthetics to keep it in line with the Curado moniker...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the SLX MGL available in JDM only? That technically still leaves a hole in the USDM.

Yes that is JDM only. We have SLX, SLX XT and SLX DC for the US market.

I believe the MGL version is a 100 size spool as well. Our models are all 150 size (slightly deeper spool).

Yeah, but Shimano has brought every other JDM name/reel over here, why not bring that too? Xince they are eliminating the Citica anyways, why not kill 2 birds with one stone? They have all them SLX reels...bring em, and you will have all them dollar points covered.

And the SLX MGL is a 70 by the way. 110yds of 10lb on the SLX vs the 105yds of 10lb on the CU70

Because a majority of the US anglers want more line capacity for use with heavier mono. They are OK with a small spool in a smaller reel, but a larger reel with a shallow spool isn't that popular outside of TT.

Im trying to figure out what you mean by this post as the SLX and the CU70/71 are both small. So you have the deeper spool available in the regular and XT versions, and the shallow in the MGL version. You want even deeper than you can up to the Curado200. Otherwise, the CU70/71 seems to not really fit the bill anywhere as the SLX has basically filled all them voids.
