Spool Advice

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Spool Advice

Post by goldrod » Tue Sep 10, 2019 6:46 pm

Thanks Tim.
This turned out far better than expected. I thought I had picked up a dud but in the sv103XS this Gigas 105 Shallow spool is a like having Cal Ripken tucked in my reel ..

I was on a spool buying spree and needless to say, I've sold all the purple spools that I have received except for two that are on their way here. The 1012 and 105 Sv spools, which I am not sure which of the two will match this reel exactly but I have a hunch. In any case, someone sold me a gigas shallow 105 spool and I dropped it into my sv103xs reel and for those who've used the Kahen or G1-1012 and 1016 spools be aware that this gigas spool is a great spool and Rivals every SV spool I've owned.
I am using it on a 7'1" rod with 5/8oz Tungsten weight and straight shank Hayabusa 4/0 ( great hook by the way) with 20lb sunlike green floro. With the brake dail at 2.5-3 Im making accurate Long distance Minimum effort pitches. NO OVER runs and honestly at the 1 I can do the same long as I watch the spool.
Tim told me that this would be a great spool for pitching and It has exceeded my expectations and definitely put my 1010 back to braid duty. I dont usually say alot about a spool so soon after using it but since I will be gone for a while I just want to give you guys a heads up.. Additionally the spool has not been tuned or in any way modified. It does not have a fixed inductor and for a second or two I thought about putting a R+ inductor on it but I am absolutely happy as it stands. Couldn't be happier

While I am at it, I have the G1-PE spool in the same reel on a super Rakkai rod and using 50LB braid.
With this short rod the spool is very controlled and able to cast this jackall kaera frog ( a small frog from what im used to) good distances. I dont walk and measure the distances but its a shooter and the V2 braid doesn't seems to be bothered. This spool has not been polished or modified in any way.

In short two spools in the same platform for two entirely different purposes. The gigas 105 shallow is a sleeper spool for sure and I know most people will say " well your pitching a 5/8oz weight so thats what you should get out that spool." But Im here to telly you you have to experience this to see it. The X7A.Mart rod is 7'1" and no matter how I pitched or cast ( brake dial 3.5 to 4) I never got and overrun and the cast was as accurate and made me look like I had been doing this for a long time. I just wanted to share and maybe someone else has these spools and can chime in.. so long guys

Nice. Always premium when you discover that perfect pairing.

Glad I could help! I tried the same combo and was very pleased. Of course, your results may vary.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Yes sir. Goldrod bought it from me.

Edit: It has blue brake blocks instead of the reds on the 103.

Does it work well when casting too or mostly pitching?

It's there a better pitching spool for t-rigs and jigs? Maybe not. I'm curious how the Tat Elite P/F stacks up. The ZPI spools are probably in the conversation as well.
