Need help on drag star

Post by 1nutinthewater » Thu Jul 18, 2019 8:49 pm

My first attempt at adding some color to reels has proven to be expensive and a new learning experience. I ordered this star for my Bantam MGL but when installed the clip pops out and creates an uneven gap between the star and they handle. Even cranking it down tight is will pop out when adjusting the drag.
The original spacer is to thick and will not fit over the top of the clip to hold it down.
Anyone have any ideas?

By "the clip" do you mean the retainer spring?

To me it sounds like a manufacturing issue.

Does it fit together well when not installed on the reel?
Or does the clip still slip out easily?

It fits fine prior to installation. It seem to not fit on the shaft correctly - the clip and the clicker underneath are being pushed up to the point of the clip popping off when the star is pushed down onto the shaft.

Sounds like some misalignment upon installation.

1. Make sure the flat side on the nut is parallel with the flat side on the drive shaft.

2. Line the flat side of the clicker plate up with the flat side inside the drag star.

3. Install drag star and be sure the shoulder of the driveshaft passes through the clicker plate.

4. While keeping pressure on the drag star to keep it in place, install your handle, and nut.

These new style drag stars with the compact spring can be a pain.

Pushing the star down over the top of the shoulder puts so much pressure on the bottom of the plate on the star that it pops the clip off.....

I wonder if you just have to file the hole out a bit more? Maybe it's just a bit too small to not allow it to slide over the shaft correctly?

Update- New drag star arrived in 6 days and fits perfect without the retainer popping out.
Kudos to Hedgehog!
