Help me decide, panfish reel.

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Help me decide, panfish reel.

Post by Just_Bass » Tue Jul 09, 2019 11:38 am

First off, I have been happy with my pixy airy red + ray’s studio spool casting 1-1.5grams jig head with crappies plastic. I also have scorpion 70 + ray’s spool that can get the job done but not as easy to control especially windy days. This make me think of getting new crappies reel with magnetic braking system instead of centrifugal. Now my dilemma is should I buy a used reel, regular alphas air (not ASC) or should I just get another ray’s spool for my alphas SV105. Please comments only these two reels since my budget is limited.
Will stock alphas air give me at least the same result as pixy+ray’s spool. How about alphas SV, which I would spend only 50 bucks for new spool.

Surely a new Alphas Air is more than 50 bucks? Don't understand your reasoning. If you've got an Alphas SV with a rays spool, you know what that will do. Alphas Air isn't as much of a finesse reel as the ASC.

Find another cheap Pixy and put another Ray's spool in it. No need for all the Pixzilla upgrades if you're fishing for panfish, just a dab of Cal's drag grease on that cork drag washer and a light drag setting, so you don't tear out that hook.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

I got pixy with ray’s spool, and also regular alphas SV. I either buy used Alphas Air from my friend or buy ray’s spool for Alphas SV.

The Alphas AIR is pretty nice for the money. The ASC is nice too. Both are better than the Ray's DIY spools in my opinion. The Ray's has more line capacity. That and the price are the only pros of it.

I hope you are right since I have alphas air coming my way.

Got that, it is as good as my aldebaran mg7 with Yumeya spool but not for 1.5gram jig head.

Anyway today went to test out alphas air and caught about 10-15 small crappies. So far I can say not very impressed, it cast good but not better than my pixy with ray’s spool. I can whip with pixy harder.

Nah too much money, and I already got rid of aldebaran for this alphas air. I think I’m good for now with 3 setups that capable of 1-1.5 grams jig head plus small crappies plastic. I might get aldebaran bfs later on if my wife allow. Ultimately I want to be able to cast 1/64oz jig head for trout and bluegills.

At 1/64 oz your really pushing the limits of even the best finesse baitcasting reels. Even if you could get a baitcaster to cast that light your not going to have very much accuracy. There are others that can cast much better than me, but anything under 1/16 oz and I'm going for a ultralight spinning rod.
Thanks for the epiphany captain obvious

You might be right, as of my equipments now I can cast 1/20oz jig head plus 2” plastic a good 20 plus yards and about 50’ with 1/32oz. But for 1/64 that is gonna be tough. I plan to also get a wimpy UL spinning rod for that too. Been looking at Daiwa Presso 6’ for that.
