Wart style baits

Post by smallies » Wed Jan 30, 2019 8:25 pm

With so many companies selling their version of an old wiggle wart now, has the gap closed between todays offerings and the old "hunting action" warts? With products today such as the 6th Sense Curve 55, the Spro Rock Crawler, the Teckel Drunker, etc. do you feel the gap has closed? Are the original hunting warts really that much better than what is offered now, or is it more of a reputation/nostalgia thing?

I have both the 6th sense Curve 55 and the Rock Crawler from spro. My opinion is the spro is far superior to the Curve due to the weight transfer in the spro cranks. I get much better distance with similar effort. Both are great, but the castability puts one as a favorite for me.

Predator baits has VERY good wart blanks IMO. I've used a few and I really like them.

This is encouraging as I just bought 2 Crawler 55s. I can't wait to toss them.

The Curve baits have gorgeous paint jobs available- absolutely love some of their colors, BUT the bait is way too buoyant. Even with a 2X No.2 on the front hanger, the bait pops up way too quickly.
The Luck E Strike wart is a cheap bait that just needs new hooks. It hunts and comes in some good colors for dirt cheap.

The Tekel Drunker is very close to a good old wiggle wart. It has the super wide kick like the wiggle warts as well as the hunting action and is the same size and shape. I would not say that the curve 55 is the same catagory as the old wiggle warts. It does hunt a bit and has similar diving depth but has a much tighter wobble. The action is closer to say a DT-6 than and old wiggle wart. Which can at times be good as it comes in some great colors you can't find from other companies and sometimes the fish want a tighter wobble but it is in no way shape or form a wiggle wart replacement as far as its action goes, that bait is the Drunker. I don't have much time with the Rock Crawler but it seems to be in between the two. Wider wobble than the Curve but not as extreme as an old wiggle wart or the drunker.

As a long time wart user, the benefit of the old warts was that they all ran differently. Some had a really wide wobble with erratic action while some didn't and you had to tune them to run properly most of the time. To me, you can't replace an original wart with any modern bait. The newer baits are a different weapon.

Yeah, knowing how a bait will run straight out of the package is a bad thing, right? Sorry, Storm's QC was not great back then.

As has been mentioned the curve isn’t exactly a wart replacement. Different action altogether. That’s not to say it’s bad but it’s far from the same. I like their paint schemes though. I throw a rock crawler when I want to go deeper. When I want to throw a wart I throw a wart. I have no problem with the current wart and am convinced I get as many bites. Plus there’s a wider selection of colors now, though I keep it pretty simple.

That's the whole point, they were erratic. If their QC was stellar they wouldn't of been the baits they were.

I've seen mixed reviews on the modern warts. Some people say they have the desired wart action, while others still covet the originals. I'm not sure I understand paying 35+ for a Wart that may not have that unintentional wart action. Check out the Megabass Spriggan or Wiggle Griffon. Other than their paint schemes, MB is well known for their lure actions. Can't go wrong :D

In my experience the new warts hunt very well as some of the old warts did but they do not have as dramatically wide of a wobble. Imagine the profile and hunting action of an old wart but with a more medium wobble. They do work well and are a good fish catcher just an altogether different bait than the original. The Drunker much more replicates a good old wart than the new wiggle wart. Not to say the new warts are inferior it just depends on which tool you need for the day and conditions.

Those evergreen cr series like the cr-8 is a huntin little bait. They are expensive but.......they come with some impressive hooks on em. Nasty sharp and strong

You can't beat evergreen baits. They're worth every penny for their action, construction, components, everything.

Also, I second (or third) the Teckel Drunker. That is one great crankbait, too. It pulls surprisingly hard as it gets down to business and that makes it fun to chuck and wind with a competent cranking combo.
This is the way.
