Should I get 872s or 902s NRX

Post by sp190 » Tue Jan 31, 2017 11:43 pm

I have an 852s and love it, also have some dobyns champion extreme rods and I like them but the NRX are awesome. The only DX I would keep is the 742. So which one would you guys recommend? Would like to fish some hair jigs and deep finesse jigs.

I have the 872S and love it for your listed baits up to 1/4oz max weight plus plastic. In the waters I fish with giant smallies the 902S seemed a bit soft, so the 872S is a better fit for me. The 902S is obviously 3" longer and has a slower, mod-fast taper whereas the 872S is faster - but not super x-fast hinge type taper like the old BSR GLX rods. To me, the 902S seems like it would be good for finesse tactics like spybaits, or small tubes 1/8oz.

The 872S has a bit more tip than the 852S which I can say is mainly due to longer length, but shares identical backbone. The extra tip almost makes the 872S seem a bit softer than the 852S - may be a benefit for those finesse hair jigs.

I have used the 872S for the past 3 seasons and it's my favorite smallmouth rod, and a very close second is the 852S.

I fish the 901 with a 1/16 lite wire marabou swam up in the column.
I fish my two 902 with TRD/ZinkerZ and TRD TubeZ on 1/20-1/15 Finesse ShroomZ lower column.
I fish the 872 with a 1/8 Micro Finesse ShroomZ and shortened Punch CrawZ head dragged over and through deep timber/boulders.
Smallies are all I fish.

JP has it about nailed down.

I have 902s and love it, but wouldn't use it for bottom contract.

I was just thinking of buying NRX 902S for bottom contact :)... I am wondering why you wouldn't use it for bottom contact?

Feel a little soft for bottom contract for me, same for the person who owned it before me. The power was toward the middle of the rod and didn't like the hook set. Knew this before I bought it. It was great for small spinners and crankbaits.

Hi BigG,

Thank you so much for great information.

May I know how deep the crankbaits you are casting with your 902S??? and also Will that be good for 17grams such as Rapala DT10?

Thanks so much in advance!!!

It will handle the 1/4 oz. well, don't know if it will handle the pull from the bill on the DT 10. I used mine for light rattle traps and jolly blades for distance. For 1/4 oz. cranks I use a baitcaster. I traded my 902s in for a Conquest 902s which is not as soft. Haven't fished it much.

I use a NRX 902S for finesse plastics and it an amazing rod. In terms of power and ability to handle big fish, see this post.

I was just looking over the 852s/872s series - pretty universally it seems like the 852s is the most often recommended go to all around NRX finesse bass spinning rod, but I don't know how many of those recommendations predate the availability/use of the 872s. The company line appears to be the 852s for general bass soft plastics, and the 872s a tube dragging rod for smallmouth.

Most agree the 872s has a slightly softer tip than the 852s, likely just be a function of it being 2" longer rather than an intentional design issue. For those that want a bit more tip than the 822 the answer has always been the 842s, or 852s if planning to throw 5" senkos and the like. Personally I throw 5" senko's on a casting setup, so the softer tip of the 872 is appealing without having to resort to the DS tip of the 822. Being a shallow water fisherman in Fl I rarely have the need for a dedicated DS rod, but it would be nice to be able to throw it in a pinch if I needed to, another reason I think the 872s might be more versatile than the 852s. But it's all just conjecture at this point - and they are so expensive it's hard to take the leap lol.

I've actually got a DX702 and DX703, which in Dobyns world is basically - 702 open hook baits, 703 buried hook baits. But I use spinning so seldom, I thought about just transitioning to one spinning rod, mainly to throw 3-4" finesse plastics, small 1/8" jigs, tubes, etc, while also being able to throw DS or Ned type stuff in a pinch. Now that I type it out, maybe the 842 is the better choice lol.

The 902 is a noodle.
I have the 852 and love it. I bought the 902 and luckily they let me take it back. I haven't had a chance to handle the 872. The 902 is SOFT. I would certainly handle one before purchase.
