Megabass Flipping ??

Post by Markymarc »

Ok so for heavier flipping I was expecting to get a O-xx Flipping special that now replaced by the Aklys. I don't like this rod: handle way too long (18'') and really heavy (weighted handle ... whatever).

The Destoyer has no flipping stick (there is a 7'6'' frogging rod).

And then I am left with the Levante Fipping special.

Might as well get an Abu Garcia at that rate ?

Why not have one made?
for about the same price and to your specifications.. I had Mr. Matt build me one as a gift to myself and it is:
Light
Balanced
the taper is exactly right for me
the action is exactly what I was looking for
has premium components
cosmetically pleasing
and is spiral wrapped with isn't a cosmetic but a functional feature.

What range of lure weights are you looking to flip? I take it your not looking for a punching rod. How heavy is the cover you are flipping to?
Thanks for the epiphany captain obvious

The Warhammer is the flipping stick in the Destroyer lineup.

Aaah very interesting thank you.

I already have a flipping stick and looking for something heavier for the punching tasks : 3/4oz + jigs and beaver tails.

Thank you

Have you had a chance to physically handle the Aklys yet? If so were those your feelings after doing so?

You can track down a first generation XX Flipping Special possibly if the Levante does not suit your desires. The Destroyer Valdivia is not simply a Frog rod. It is a GREAT flipping rod as well. Actually I use it more for that technique than I do frogging. For punching I would suggest the Destroyer Warhammer. It is more than capable.

All of that being said the Aklys is a rod you need to pick up and see in person. It is impressive in hand and though you are not happy with the specs I can assure you that actually fishing with it that it is impressive in what it is and can do.

The Aklys is a unique rod. I haven't fished it yet as the mat punching bite isn't up and running. When I first picked it up I was surprised by the overall weight - 10.1 oz. however, when I mounted a reel, the concept of the rod made sense. It is a truly neutrally balanced rod that feels absolutely incredible in hand. It took some serious guts to build that rod as heavy as it is, but it's so perfectly balanced, even with a light weight reel, that it will really be popular with flip/punch guys. I'm looking forward to fishing one soon...
