What happen to the Z hype?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

What happen to the Z hype?

Post by 1nutinthewater »

Ever since this crazy orange reel with zero bearings came out I have heard nothing? Is it really that bad?
Our tradition is that of the first who sneaked away to the creek when tribe did not really need fish

I thought this was going to be about gossiping about a Daiwa Z1016.

X3.
If it is about the Zero bearing reel, haven't used one, but the ones for sale locally feel very low quality. Knock a heap of money from the price and they may get a few people willing to risk a purchase.

Same thing happens to every fad. Unless its from Daiwa/Megabass/Shimano, nothing is worth even hyping.

The Z1016 is a magical, mythical creature that all Daiwa fans have been pining for ever since the Z2020 came out. At this point, I'm thinking it never will be seen.

Hate to say it, but rationally what would be the advantage to a Z1016 versus an SV103 with a better G1 spool? I would love to see a non T-wing $350 range reel to compete with the Bantam, maybe use the better Steez SV TW style sideplate and trickle down the "micro mesh" gears, but I doubt that for at least a few years. Still personally wanting a Pixy SV here.

Who knows. The SV spools have most of the versatility of the 3D brakes do and doesn't add weight. You think the Steez A would have been platform to try to bring the 3D brakes back.

Pixy SV...would be nice. With an 8.1 ratio, sub 5oz...it would be a beast

I would take an Alphas/TD-Z hybrid platform that even weighed like 6.5oz range. That way it should still be solid enough for general purpose too, not that super light reels don't work, they just turn some off. Would love to see an SV105 spool get the G1 treatment of the Zillion SV TW while still including the shorter inductor to free up casting. I really wonder what will appear from the 2 big dogs in the next 10 years.

Actually, that comment was more a little joke to as much as the Z1016 has been and is still brought up anytime there is talk of new reels (in this case not even a Daiwa). Just having fun. Although, I do like the 3D braking.

On the "orange" Concept Z, I had this sudden flash from my memory cells about the first great "Z."

It was the Datsun 240Z brought to America in 1970 or '71 as I recall. Oddly, it seems it was only available in a few colors and one of them was . . . an orange body with black interior.

It was right at the juncture in time between us kids joking about cars from Japan being junk . . . to dominating the auto market here.

Not so with the Concept Z, I think. This is where hype meets reality. I think, at best, it will find a niche market, maybe with salty anglers since it might have more resistance to the corrosive effects of fishing those waters. Or, perhaps they drop the price significantly to attract buyers in a bit lower price range.

Ehh, ~~. Z2020 is a very good non-bass reel but a forced square peg bass reel.
