If there are any older guys here that fished as teenagers, you'll no doubt remember fishing with your first plastic worm. Back in the 1960s the only colors available were black, purple, red and natural and the one manufacturer was Creme Lures. We caught so many nice bass on these straight worms. We would use 4 lb Stren on our Garcia Mitchell 308 reels and the most productive size and color worm was the little skinny 4 inch worm in black. Purple was pretty good and sometimes red worked too. We rigged them with an open # 10 bait holder hook. No weight. Cast them out and just let them sink, then just slowly reel them back. Sometimes we just put our rods down in a forked stick after casting out and did nothing. Like fishing for catfish or carp. The bass would swim by and see the worm and suck it in.
It seems like now it is hard to find all black worms unless you make a special order with someone who pours plastic worms.
