Dobyns Flipping Rod models

Post by 78Staff » Fri Jun 09, 2017 6:25 pm

Looking at adding a Flipping outfit... to be honest I haven't done much pure flipping in the past, but do flip and pitch jigs and creature etc with my DX745. Dedicating a rod to flipping and punching would would also allow to switch the 745 over to Fluoro for jigs (vs braid on there now).

Dobyns now has several options for Flipping, the Champ 765FLIP, 766FLIP, and 805FLIP/PUNCH as well as the DX795FLIP DX805FLIP/PUNCH. Heck there are are few Fury models as well. I know the 765FLIP is very popular and one of the most often recommended models, but since I already have a DX745 I don't need a flipping rod to be a jack of all trades heavy stick - so I was leaning toward the 766, 795,or one of the 805 models, strung up with 65-80 braid to handle all my flipping, punching, anything like that in heavy grass cover.

Any revelation that would make one stand out over the other? The hesitation I have on the 805's are traveling and length - I'm a non boater so do have to travel with rods and am at the whim of rod locker length on various boats and or hanging off the passenger side, etc.

I don't have any Dobyns rods, but as far as length goes I've found an 8' stick with a relatively short handle to be great for actual flipping and pitching both. I have no problem pitching for distance and accuracy with it and the handle stays out of the way. It makes for a somewhat tip heavy setup, but I don't really notice. Doesn't cast worth a damn, though, but like you said, that doesn't matter. Anyway, if there's a Dobyns that fits that description you should give it a good look.
This is the way.

Also considering a 746C as well, again due to the length... The 795 I'm sure is a great choice, just worried about toting around 8ft rods basically as a Co.

Another vote for the DX 795. It's just one of those rods that was done right.
