SV Spool Paranoia
SV Spool Paranoia
So after reading about stuck inductors I am terrified. My SV105 did something strange today and it confused me. I cast and went to adjust afterwards and it felt like the brake dial adjustment was spinning without clicking... Then I paused, slowed down, tried again and it clicked and adjusted fine. I checked the flat screw to make sure it was tight and it was torqued down enough to where it would have taken a penny to open it. I haven't fished in about 3 weeks so I figure it sat for a while. Also my hands were freezing and it is possible I just didn't turn it as far as I thought or had it between clicks.
I read all day about inductors sticking though and it has me paranoid my SS/SV or SV105 will start doing this, so far they have not, I have had the SS/SV for a few months and fished it primarily with 1/8 to 1/4 lures, and I have had the SV105 for almost a year throwing tiny lures to 1/4. They are more finesse oriented reels for me and don't bomb heavy lures on heavy line.
Should I be as worried as I am that this is a problem I will encounter or am I being overly paranoid? If it does happen I do trust Daiwa to fix it regardless how past warranty I am, they have been a great company when it comes to service. This just threw me off bad because I am considering a new reel (another 105, SV103, Zillion SV TW, Chronarch MGL, Curado 70) and now I feel nervous about SV spools which has been one of my favorite features...
On a strange side note, the drag on my 9.1 Zillion TWS has been feeling weak when maxed out and for some reason today felt 100% fresh...

Re: SV Spool Paranoia
Dont worry had to fix two inductors that had fallen off two Z200H's spool carriers...
There are worse things than being stuck, like inductors that rattle around in a reel all day and wear the plastic side plates parts out.

Re: SV Spool Paranoia
So it isn't too hard to fix??? I watched a tutorial about filling the gap between the angled plastic and metal axle, preventing the inductor's angled plastic from sticking in there. I figure mine are fine for now and new enough Daiwa would do me right...
Re: SV Spool Paranoia
I've owned several SV reels and never had one stick; I would not worry about it. Oddly enough my two Steez 103's sat for about 8 months this year and most in the garage and both inductors were stuck in the out position...gave them a quick pull and they freed up instantly. I oiled them and never had another issue.
Re: SV Spool Paranoia
Thank you, this is what I was looking for. I know things happen, but it didn't seem like a deadly problem, just some reported it being pretty bad. I still don't know what was going on with the brake dial but will find out when I get a chance to breakdown some equipment.Frosty wrote:I've owned several SV reels and never had one stick; I would not worry about it. Re: SV Spool Paranoia
Using a dry lube in there where the inductor slide travels along the shaft, is somewhat better than an oil also.

I used WD-40Slazmo wrote:Using a dry lube in there where the inductor slide travels along the shaft, is somewhat better than an oil also.
Re: SV Spool Paranoia
I have a bunch of 1st gen steez with SV 105's and have never had one stick. I have 2 Alphas SVs and have never had them stick. I had an SS SV for a few seasons and never had that stick. The problem must be a small percentage of the spools having that issue or you would see more posts about it. I'm not saying it doesn't exist. I just don't think it's widespread.
Re: SV Spool Paranoia
Interesting... my father is a mechanical engineer and suggested this, I think it is like a powder or something right?Slazmo wrote:Using a dry lube in there where the inductor slide travels along the shaft, is somewhat better than an oil also.
I wonder if certain weights or styles of fishing make sticking more likely? Or it was just as the other post stated and a small percentage problem...
Re: SV Spool Paranoia
Is it safe to assume that a spool prone to sticking will exibit this behavior out of the box or is this something that can develop over time? I've been fortunate to avoid the issue thus far.

You have to be careful with WD40, as it has a number of ingredients in it besides oil. A solvant being one . Which is why it can be used as a degreaser and cleaner. It is not a super fine oil product either.Frosty wrote:I used WD-40Slazmo wrote:Using a dry lube in there where the inductor slide travels along the shaft, is somewhat better than an oil also.
I use the hell out of it, just not on reel internals.

Re: SV Spool Paranoia
You just dont want gumming or absorption of any grit - i mean its a sliding plastic part on a short shaft however a graphite or WS2 powder wiuld be sufficient.
You want it to slide unhindered and not attract any abrasives.

It happened to mine and mine was new.LowRange wrote:Is it safe to assume that a spool prone to sticking will exibit this behavior out of the box or is this something that can develop over time? I've been fortunate to avoid the issue thus far.

What model was your reel??? Also how long did it take to happen and did Daiwa assist with the issue???QUAKEnSHAKE wrote:It happened to mine and mine was new.LowRange wrote:Is it safe to assume that a spool prone to sticking will exibit this behavior out of the box or is this something that can develop over time? Re: SV Spool Paranoia
I remember hearing about stuck inductors a couple of years ago, but from memory I think it was happening when people were using SV spools in reels other than the ones they came in. Can't be sure, but I'm fairly sure it was people putting Steez spools in TDZs?
