Anyone use a Pixy Type R as a jig reel?

The title says it all. I'm not worried about capacity since I use braid and a leader. Anything I should be wary of? If not, would a TD-Z 103ML or 100ML be better suited (I have 7.1 gears)? I have all 3, just trying to figure out which rod should be home to which reel. Thanks in advance!

Although I have no doubt my px r would be fine as a jig reel, I use mine for wacky rigs and flick shakes. I have a met xg and Ito on my jig rods. They just feel better on my 7' plus rods.

I have used mine for almost everything except big swimbaits and a-rigs. I mainly use it for finesse stuff, but I often switch to 3/8-1/2 oz jigs and it does that just fine. I've also used it many times to fish frogs. I have a stock Ito and it definately pitches better than it. Can't comment on the 100.

It's your reel, so you can use it however you like.
An attentive thumb will make up for a weak drag, so give it a shot. That reel won't suffer.

X2 I had a buddy who used his all stock 1st Gen Conquest 51, for punching on the California Delta for years. Talk about a weak drag!

Can I ask why you use mono?

I use mono because of preference. I don't like how braid comes off the reel and Im using light wire jig hooks.
Im using a zillion rod med heavy i got off here and the reel seems to be the perfect matchup for me with that rod and I have been looking. i am using 8lb test and fishing clear water. Its just what I prefer for what I am doing.

cool i was curious thanks.... I might give it a try I have never used mono for that application there could be some benefits

It has a max drag of 8.8lbs and that's more than a 103ml by about 3lbs if my memory serves me right. 8lbs is plenty for my area and as mentioned you can use your thumb to get some extra drag. I'd go for it. I know Trey uses his for close quarters frog fishing and has no problems with it.

I'd certainly take a TDZ with 7:1 gears over a PX Type R for *my* jig fishing, but there's nothing stopping the PX Type R from serving as a jig reel.

I do have 3 TD-Z's to choose from, as well as a pair of 100ML's, so I'm not hurting for options. I was thinking of putting together a featherweight jig setup, I don't fish super heavy cover so I don't need heavy line/capacity (I'll be putting 20# 832 with an FC leader on it). It would give me an excuse to buy a light rod too, so...

He's been feeding well lately, luckily he's still fairly cheap! I found a handleless 100ML for $50, a 6.3 and 7.1 gear set for $70, a 103 ML (minus spool and handle) for $50, the Type R in question (no handle or spool) for $50, plus a few lure lots... Only 6 more months until bass season opens, ugh...
