Travel/pack rod options?

darren - is that braid with a leader that you have spooled ?
and that reel foot protector - is that home made or supplied with the reel ?

Yes I use 8 braid then tip off with metal leader for toothy fish or mono/fluro for lrf fishing.sometimes use braid straight through for ultimate sensitivity.

I know what you mean. I'm mega fussy and a bit ott (not uncommon on this forum though!) I've been through quite a lot looking for the holy grail rod, i think I have found it in the three rods I have shown but each serves a different purpose,you need to be clear on what weight and style of lure /bait you will be using and size of fish you are expecting to encounter.also the type of water you will be fishing,I.e how far back from bank you will be casting from,extra length helps if there is bush on edge of bank you need to be clear of.if I'm fishing a lake I will use a different rod to what I take to the river and so on and so fourth.

That's just it, there's so many different types of water I'll have access to. When I was there this fall the place I stayed(same place I'll be staying next summer) was on a river 20+ feet across, when we hiked we found little streams and lakes high up in the mountains. Trout are completely new to me, I don't actually know what most people who target them use for different situations. I know little inline spinners are popular and small minnow type baits. I've only ever fished rivers/streams 3-4 times so I don't know how to handle them well or what baits/presentations work best depending on the situation. I am completely new to this and it is overwhelming to say the least. However I have little streams near me that are very similar to what I saw in Colorado, they just don't have trout in them. So I'll be trying to at least experiment on them. It's actually really fun reading up on stuff that isn't Bass or Panfish.


This stream held a ton of little brook trout and was one of the main reasons I even started looking into travel rods. It seemed every section of slack water behind a big rock held 2-3 8" or so brook trout and in a few areas where the stream got wider and slowed down there where trout behind every rock.

Then there's this lake which had a brown trout all over the place. They ranged in size from 8-14 inches if I had to guess. They weren't the slightest bit scared of people, which makes me believe catching them would be very difficult.

I don't currently own one, I do plan on trying to buy one over the winter. Trying to debate on going with a full set up from say Orvis versus buying it all separately. Honestly though a camera and ultralight set up are higher on my priorities for my next trip.

I honestly didn't think finding an ultralight travel rod would be this difficult. I mean there's a bunch of options, it's just finding info on them and a place that has them in stock. I guess it's a good thing I have 7-8 months before my trip.

That looks like a really nice option I've been slowly upgrading my father's gear from his walmart specials and he needs a good trout/travel rod. May have to pick one up for him for Christmas.

The Presso travel rod does look interesting...a bit of a step up in quality

Well after much reading and the like, I think ive narrowed it down to three rods.

After reading some fishing regulations it looks like I am limited to one hook(up to three points on one shank) on the lures. Also I can not use any form of live bait so that limits me to inline spinners, spoons, and few small crank baits. The Megabass is on top of the list followed by the Smith LTD. Thinking a Shimano Twin Power, Stradic, Cardiff, or Complex in the C2000HGS size for a reel. Still researching these to figure out the differences. From what I've been reading the Twin Power seems to be the one to have, but everyone that owns a Cardiff seems to absolutely love it. I plan on using 3# mono probably DAM Tectan as I have been wanting to try it and have read it is a great line as long as you understand it breaks right at its rating.
