Re: Favorite Gear ratio for Walking the Dog
6.3:1 or 7.1:1 are fine... but 6.8:1 is perfect

faster the ratio, the faster you can pick up your slack to make another cast.

+1
Faster the better for me! Using a E7 now and sometimes I wish I had a faster reel; especially if fishing schooling fish.

What my name is?

Any gear ratio will be just fine (6 or 7) for walking the dog and it all depends what type of fish you are going for.
for top water lures, I will use fast or extra fast rod, well...that is just me

6.3 is perfect. 7.1 works also, but 5 is to slow.
Re: Favorite Gear ratio for Walking the Dog
Since there has been many posts about gear ratios already, let me suggest to you what I think is one of the most important things to walking the dog: The reel size/shape. I would personally make sure that the reel fits my hand well since I like to palm my reels. To me, this would make all the difference in walking the dog since it takes a lot out of you when you're constantly walking the dog all day.
Since I have small hands, a wide reel like the E7 would put more strain on my hands while constantly walking the dog compared to a reel like the Serrano (Both reels earlier mentioned in this thread).
With that said, I only use baitcasters for walking the dog because of the coolness factor.. lol. Sometimes when I see boils, I get over-excited and cast too fast resulting in backlashes..

I love my curado 50e, It is also listed has a frogging reel in TW. Its not to fast or too slow. U can always fix ur slack so its not too long or too short. you really dont have to slow down or speed up ur reeling, it just comes in at the perfect pace.

My favrite reel for all my top water lures is a zillion 6:3.1 ,:big grin: i try 7:0.1 and i found it too fast, i simply reel the slack of my lures .

As fast as possible. Sometimes they want it slow, sometimes they want it practically skipping across the surface. You can't speed up a 5:1 reel but you can slow down a 7:1 reel. I use a Revo HS or a 201E7.

I've been using a 6.3:1 ratio for walking baits. For frogs and other top waters, I usually pick the 7 up.

7.1:1
Excellent for picking up slack immediately, and like many others have said, once you get the cadence down, you'll be able to adjust for the reel picking up more line per handle turn than with other reels.

I started with spinning reels. They have higher ipt's than baitcasters. So now with baitcasters, I'll say fastest gear with fastest ipt will work better for me.
slip bobbing is the laziest way to fish

Re: Favorite Gear ratio for Walking the Dog
Another vote for the 6.3:1 works well for me.
