Kistler Custom Rods Introduces Their Stock Model Z-Bone LEX

Image

Introduction: Just last year at ICAST 2010, Trey Kistler shared with us his intent to begin offering stock models of their new, and growing line of Z-Bone rods. Previously, the only way to get a Z-Bone was to "Build Your Own", but realizing a great number of anglers need to feel a rod in their hand before placing an order and an even greater number want immediate gratification when purchasing a high dollar fishing rod, he decided to compliment the build to order Z-Bones with a lineup of stock models.

Wow, the aesthetics are very garish--sort of like folk art!

That assemblage of components just doesn't flow. They're trying too hard.

Edited to add: I know what they're trying to achieve but the execution and end result don't really cut it. The component selection along with the overall color scheme of the materials look like a hastily thrown together mish-mash of knobby lumps. They should've consulted with a fengshui master...

Your eyes (and mine too) don't like the discontinuity of the split reel seat combined with the lumps. Maybe it is not so bad with a reel mounted on it, but it does look ugly without a reel.

What I find interesting here is that Kistler has lowered the costs of the options for the "custom rods", it used to be that you could configure a rod the same as the stock and come with a very similar price, then all the prices just went crazy and the cost of a rod went up about 30 % , I know because I was about to pull the trigger when this happened...

The looks of the rod also seem like too much for my taste, but the good thing is that you can configure it. The last time I ended up purchasing a stock LE 7´ MH 3 to try it out, the rod is great, altough it is not more sensitive, lighter or better balanced than a Loomis GLX or Dobyns DX IMHO.

Being off kilter doesn't make for a good rod.
