worth it?

Post by ecu daniel 14 » Sat Mar 19, 2011 2:16 pm

how much of a difference does upgrading your bearings make? I have seen videos on youtube of people showing boca bearing upgraded free spool, while it is impressive, is it really worth that much money? I have a zillion coastal and I think it would be a few hundred bucks to upgrade the bearings on it...

You really only need 2 bearings to increase the casting distance, the spool bearing and the sideplate bearing. If you buy the orange seals they are about $30. And in my opinion they are worth the extra $30.

Absolutely correct. A bearing upgrade is a game changer in reel casting performance. Can turn a mediocre reel into a star for $30. Factory bearings are where the manufacturer can save a lot of money by using cheaper versions and still show a high bearing count. IIRC, the Steez has ABEC5's. So adding ABEC 7s or 9's to your reel can provide a huge improvement in casting performance.

I'm tot taking anything away for the stock Steez performance.

As with all things, your results may vary

Do you have to do anything to the bearings when buying them then installing them or is it as simple as removing the old ones and putting new ones in?

Remove seals, soak in acetone or solvent overnight, remove from acetone and air dry for several hours, add a small drop of oil to bearings, install seals, install into reel, enjoy. :big grin: (this is fror the orange seals, if you purchase metal shielded bearings then skip removing & replacing shields)

Is the upgrade more noticable on reels with out the superfree or free floating spool design? I.E. Abu C series and older bantam curados and chronarchs?

They do seem to make a bigger difference on reels that are not Super Free design in my opinion. But there is a difference on the super free reels too.

Like these guys said, you only need the spool and sideplate bearings..
Definitely worth the $30, imo.

Are you suppose to oil the bearings when you install them?

Just got a stock chronarch D5....casting abilities are great....should I upgrade to boca orange seals? Ive got $500 burning a hole in my wallet and $30 wont hurt....do I need to buy some lube too? Oust or hot sauce?

I always clean them first, just to be sure there's no debris..
Then put a small drop of oil in each. Spin em a little to distribute the oil and you're good to go.
