I dont see a lot of people throwing black on my lake. Mostly white and bright. Fairly clear water.

I used to think the same thing about our chain ( IL Fox Chain) when I first moved here.toporanger wrote:I dont see a lot of people throwing black on my lake. Mostly white and bright. Fairly clear water.
First 4 ski day there was bright , clear, hot (78 water temps in 4 feet of water) and the only thing my guide would throw was black. I used firetiger for a couple hours until I switched to black also. 4 - 39"+ muskie in under three hours. And we each had 9 more follows each in that period also.
There are TONS of those blackish shad up here.
A lot of what I thought were muskie basics were dispelled that day for me.

Most of the guides on Kinkaid seem to gravitate to some type of white spinner or a jerkbait. I have seen people throwing rubber but never a guide that I know of. My best bait this season was a DD22 in psycho shad while chasing schools of spotted bass. I couldnt keep the Muskie off of it at times lol

Essentially up here we start off the ice out with smaller presentations. That may be a spinner , jerkbait ( including rubber ones) etc. but they are the smallest presentation of the year moved much slower than what happens once the water warms. As temps warm we mostly switch to bladed baits moving them faster and upsizing as the temps climb. By mid-summmer everyone is burning 'bucktails' and or spinnerbaits. Jerbaits are still used but not as often as the spinners.
Once the water cools substantially ( 40's) from summer temps it's all about huge baits moved slower once again. The females are putting on the feedback and the bait of choice switches to big Dogs, Phantom ...gliders and jerks. Pounder rubbers are not rare up here. And of course dragging suckers. Not my favorite style of fishing but I usually have the back of the boat guys tend them as I cast.
Presentation is always way more important than color , but my confidence colors are bright and dark.

Is that keel weighted or does it spin?

Neither. Once it settles after the cast the balancing arms keep it from spinning.frankdi wrote:Is that keel weighted or does it spin?
Super weed free , chugs over stucture and creates huge water displacement.
