Jig head paint...

Post by 11kalnmitc » Fri Mar 14, 2014 1:52 am

Anyone on here that makes jigs and paints their own heads this question is for you. If you weren't using a powder coat what would you use? I'm looking for brands and application methods. Thanks!

If I were not using powder paint...

I'd probably use my standard airbrush paint (Createx) and a Devcon clear coat.

An airbrush and good paint. Probably overkill but even kingfish find it tough to chip my jig heads.

I've used the vinyl paint for certain applications.

Any specific brand? I've been making a number of jigs over this winter and recently got to test a few out. the paint was applied properly but it peeled right off the jighead in an hour. im going to make some adjustments and try with some others. Also i called the company and they said this wasn't something that normally happened....
Any thoughts on this?

this is the type i have used.

you need to let the paint cure for at least 24hrs, better if longer.

That's the same kind I've been using and like i said I was extremely happy with how the application process and finished product looked but it didn't hold up. Next time I'm going to take some somewhat heavy grit sandpaper to the jighead really quick and then wipe it down with some alcohol to get rid of any oils or dust left over. I hope this solves the issue as I really do like the product if it stays on the jighead.

those are all good ideas, I have had very few issues with that paint, so maybe you got a bad bottle? Make sure you mix it really well too and wait at least 15 minutes between coats. Good luck!

I'll be doing my next batch in a couple months whenever I get home for the summer from college. I'll try some of these ideas and post back. Thanks

One thing you need to do with vinyl is make sure you are in a well ventilated area, I use to use vinyl for jigs until I discovered powder paint back in 2003, if it wasn't for that I may have quit making tackle as the vinyl paint was giving me some real nasty headaches that you couldn't get rid of with Tylenol. Be careful.
