Straight from the garage - 7" Swimbait
Straight from the garage - 7" Swimbait
I always wanted to make baits, but didnt really have the time. I started with just some 1 1/4" wooden dowels and jointing them together but never finished or fished them. I started carving some stuff but was too impatient.. the last few months i got the bug again and found an old piece of doug fir, figured it was hard enough to take a beating out there and started to carve it. This is what it came out like. I didnt cut it. I didnt want to ruin it. LOL
then i figured, well if i make a good one, then ill want more!! so i started reading around and watching videos. Luckily enough a swimbait company called Tylure is local. I cant thank Tyler and Chris enough... i made another carving out of basswood about 16-18 hours of carving time, but this would be the master for 4 versions of a bait I wanted to make. After molding the bait, i shot it up with some paint just to see what it would look like.
I made masters of each piece, 2 piece, and 2 different 3 piece styles. A regular swimmer and a tail whip style where the tail has 360 degree movement. Here is the final version of the tail whip style and the first fully produced bait to hit the water theres a few little imperfections that I will fix in the prep portion of the bait. The P logo is carved into the side
Bait is 7" and weighs 2.2oz-3 oz based on sink rates
Finally getting into the production stage!!

Very nice. Wish I had that talent, but you hand me a knife and someone(likely myself) always ends up with stiches. Killer photography skills as well. Perfect backdrops to showcase your talent! If you ever want one tested out in CO.......

Really wish I had the patience to at least finish carving something like this. Everything you do looks awesome!
