Jig tying vise
Jig tying vise
What is a good entry level vise that can tie up 8/0 sized jig hooks? Looking to get into tying my own jigs.
Thanks
Thanks

I would think a Regal would be a good safe choice, durable, well made and cheap compared to the top of the line plus they are very easy to use.http://www.regalvise.com/fly_tying_vise.html
Re: Jig tying vise
I was thinking something along the lines of $75 or less

The 8/0 hooks is really going to limit you and I don't think any vise that cheap is going to hold an 8/0 hook. I have a Griffin Odyessey rotary vise with a lifetime warranty for $85 but it only takes up to a 4/0 and that is what I needed, most vises don't go past a 2/0. I know of a Peak brand vise that does big Saltwater hooks but the vise is like $150 and then you have to buy the big jaws for the large hooks seperately and they run like $75 for a set so you're over $200 right there. I think Peak will be the brand for you to look at, look for a used one on ebay, they are very good and so is the Regal but even a used one that holds large Saltwater hooks is going to be over $200. Good luck.

Gotcha, because of the size of hooks I want to tie, it brings the lower limit higher.

for 8/0 i would go with a bench vise or a dyna king, they have hook pockets that completely stop large hooks from slippingigl00jx wrote:Gotcha, because of the size of hooks I want to tie, it brings the lower limit higher.

I overestimated the size of hooks I'll be using. I don't expect to go over 5/0.
Thanks for the advice. A Griffin Odyssey will be in my future.

Take a look at the spring vise that Jann’s Netcraft carries. It will work with hooks up to 5/0 and is a very solid vise that many people use for tying up larger jigs. It features a c-clamp mount that will secure it to a workbench or table.
