Making Your Own Topwater Bait Tutorial
Making Your Own Topwater Bait Tutorial
What's up my fellow anglers, i made a tutorial video on how to make your own spooks. Any constructive feedback about the bait and video would be appreciated. Tight lines my friends!

Interesting. I did not know spooks were weighted so far back.
This belongs in the garage baits section by the way.

Very nicely done!! What kind of balsa wood grade do you use?

No problem guys. I actually just used some spindles from home depot. Dont even think its balsa. This wood was only about 4 dollar for about 4 feet. Pretty cheap stuff but it floats and walks well, now to see if it will hold up during striper season.

nice stuff man.
if you have problems with the surface durability of the wood, try to impregnate/stabilize it with some furniture finish.
just get some finish, put inside it the body (after you added the weight and hardware) and cover it. (use the original package box of the finish.)
after one day get it out and let it dry for a day or two. then paint it.

Cool tutorial, great bait, and thanks.
What I do with my wood baits after shaping is apply a coat of fiberglass resin. This will protect the wood from hooks scratching the wood and having it swell from water contact. Its one more step but the bait will last longer.

Nice job. looks like you could add some more weight to the tail to get more walk you want about half the back just under the water.looks like your using pine and that wood does soak up water. Might want to seal the wood if you dnt and you and a clearcoat finish and the coat gets punctured by hooks or teeth the wood will swell up and crack your finish. Or you can use cedar dosnt swell up like pine.

That is a great video. Thanks for posting it. I bought some of the same wood from HD for winter time project. I want to try and make some poppers and torpedo type baits. Now maybe I will also try a spook.
