needing advice on NFC HM blanks ASAP

When production rods are not enough, it's time to go custom. Come share your experiences building and/or ordering a custom rod and tell us if you'll ever go back to off the shelf.

needing advice on NFC HM blanks ASAP

Post by Hoosierhawg » Thu Mar 23, 2017 9:25 pm

I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge. I've decided to order a few NFC top-of-the-line blanks. Having never felt one myself, I'm trying to make sure I get the correct actions. Here's what I'm after...

1. Something similar to the old G.Loomis 843 action. Looking for 7'-7'3" length. I'll be using it as dedicated texas rigged plastic rod. Typically be using 3/16-1/4oz weights plus lure & hook. The heaviest rig being 5/16oz weight and 10" worm.

2. Something with action similar to the newer G.Loomis 855. Looking for 7'-7'3" length. This will be my dedicated jig rod. Typically use 5/16-3/8oz jigs plus trailer. Occasionally up to 1/2oz jig plus trailer.

3. Something like the old G.Loomis MBR783 action. Looking for 6'6"-6'9" length. This will be my weightless plastics rod (flukes, senkos, trick worms, etc.).

If anyone has experience with these rods and the NFC blanks, please point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance, guys. I'm pumped, and can't wait to get these built :D

I'm leaning toward...

1. 708 IM since nothing in the HM series seems equivalent
2. 709 HM
3. 705 HM with 3-4" trimmed off the butt

What do you all think?

For what its worth...

The Loomis MB843 is about 570 grams of power and 67° of action.

The NFC MB 709 is about 670 grams and 57°.

The MB 705 is 390 grams and 64°.

The MB783 is 515 grams and 64°.

The MB 667 is 520 and 57°.

I would much rather add length to a blank and make it faster than cut a blank and make it slower. Unless, of course, my goal were to make it slower.

Don't overlook the Spin Jig blanks. The SJ705 come in right around 480 - 490 grams of power. The 706 is a few degrees faster and a touch more powerful. For what it's worth, if you're not going high mod I'd look very closely at Point Blank. A little less money than the IMs and they are magic imo. Plus they list data on their website.

Hey Matt. Is this your creation? I stumbled across it a few days ago looking for info on the MB664 HM

Not my creation. I contribute. There are a half a dozen or so of us.

Thanks for the info, guys. I was leaning toward Point Blank, but then I was notified of NFC's 50% off sale going on. Since I can get NFC HM blanks for $120-$150, I figure WTH...I'm going for it. If I don't like the feel of the blanks once in hand, I'll do some trading for PB, UMBX, or SCV. I really appreciate the help.

I ordered up a couple HM 705 blanks. Does anyone have a good spacing guide to use for these?

Worst case I'll go by a couple 7' rods I already have in Loomis and St. Croix.

Was going to buy a new GLX rod, but with the 50% off blank sale I can build practically the same rod for $230-$240. Can get 2 rods for marginally the same cost as a GLX, and I would put the HM blanks up against the GLX any day.
