Interesting. Any more details on this?
All I've tried to do is translate it. Here's the link if anyone wants to read it.

Incredibly cool, even if they're synthetic.
I remember seeing ruby bearings in an old Abu many years ago and that was mind blowing.

Very cool.
Anyone know how the originals performed or anything about the exact makeup of the inserts?

I would love those if they were in casting size

With EDC pocket tops you can sometimes pick the contact point of your top for increase spin times. Stainless steel is the "base model" contact point. SiC is the upgrade. And ruby is the premium contact point. Ruby is very low friction.

Any idea what their synthetic ruby is made of?Mattman wrote:With EDC pocket tops you can sometimes pick the contact point of your top for increase spin times. Stainless steel is the "base model" contact point. SiC is the upgrade. And ruby is the premium contact point. Ruby is very low friction.
Re: Fuji limited remake of Ruby guides
My understanding is that chemically (the purity is a lot better) they are the same as natural rubies with the difference being they are made in a controlled environment lab. Here is a link to how synthetic rubies are made. Interesting if nothing else.Mike and Pike wrote:Any idea what their synthetic ruby is made of?Mattman wrote:With EDC pocket tops you can sometimes pick the contact point of your top for increase spin times. Nothing new here Union Carbide and others have been making synthetic stones forever it seems. Similar technology to making silicone wafers are used for some. Pocket watches, clocks, etc. had ruby bearings in them, that's what a "jeweled movement" meant. Walk into a Union Carbide plant that does this and they have facet cut jewels they have made the size of an egg on display in the lobby. When they were originally available they were like $ 100 a pop, if I remeber right, well out of my price range. The Gold Cermet, hope I'm spelling it right, were a much better value and guide material.

Re: Fuji limited remake of Ruby guides
Gold Cermet died out many years ago due to being plainly far out of reach value wise for most home builders.
I remember one rod the guide train was worth more than the rod as a whole.

Re: Fuji limited remake of Ruby guides
Just returned from a trip to Japan for the annual Fuji meet and greet and spent a day at the Japan Fishing Show in Yokohama. Ruby guides were on display and more stunning in person than any photo could capture. The display was a complete selection of RV's but if I remember correctly they can actually put the rings in other K-Series frames (NOT positive about that). They don't offer anything below a size 6 or above a size 30 and the series is limited to 500 sets. We have ordered 2 sets mostly for display but they will retail for around $1000 a set. Hurry, supplies are limited.

Bling would be an understatement if guides are the most expensive component of your rod
Re: Fuji limited remake of Ruby guides
Seems like Fuji is making a limited run now with sapphire inserts.
