Phoenix K2 714 blank
I'm currently using a Loomis NRX 843C for pitching t-rigs up to about 1/2 or 5/8oz total wt. I want to move up a little in power(and sensitivity) I'm considering having a rod built on the K2 714. Am I on the right track or would I be better off with the 715? If I like the K2's I may end up building another for heavier jigs.I would think that would be were the 715 comes in maybe.
To those that have used the 714 how do you like the action? I've heard some say its too slow but I really don't care for ex-fast tips.

Re: Phoenix K2 714 blank
Have a 714 and it is sweet. Sensitivity is off the charts. Action is a little slower than most, but I have no problems hooking fish, so not a major concern for me.
Haven't fished the NRX 843, but if the lure rating is correct, you'll probably find the 714 too similar in power for your liking. I haven't got up to 3/4 on the 714 yet, but it feels pretty similar in power to my SC 70MF (5/8 top). I'd expect the 715 to give you the power bump over the 843 that you expect.
Most find the K2's a little softer than expected. They fish really close to the ratings for me though. If you are serious about a heavier powered blank for jigs, I'd build the 715 first. Then if it's too light, you can use it for the Trig rod you're looking for here. If you start with the 714 and it's too light, then it won't fit either of the roles you're looking to fill.

I agree, start with the 715. I have a 683 and a 684 and the 684 is very similar to the loomis 3 power.

i'd also go with the 715. i have two of these (and no 714's but i do have a 764). i use the 715's for jigs ranging from 1/4 to 3/4 (though the 3/4 is kinda at the top end).

Re: Phoenix K2 714 blank
I have not measured the 714 but I have measured two 715's.
Power was 655 and 681 grams. That is right in line with the Loomis MB844.

and that's probably why these rods remind me of my (now gone) loomis mb844Mattman wrote:I have not measured the 714 but I have measured two 715's.

I will echo what everyone else has said. The 714 will be too light for what you are looking to do. The 715 is a lot like the 844 with maybe a little more stiff tip. For jigs, light carolina, or heavier t-rigs that 715 is hard to beat. The 714 I uses for 1/4 oz texas rigs and jerkbaits. I actually really like it for jerkbait(MB 110) fishing.

i have a k2 764 that i use for "heavier" dropshotting but i've also used it to fish jerkbaits ---- the 110 in particular.SPAZ wrote:I will echo what everyone else has said. We fish a lot of T-rigged (loop knot with ball sinker) up here due to the dense mangroves. Found the 744 to be a better pitching stick.

Re: Phoenix K2 714 blank
I use my 736 K2 for the same aplication with mostly 3/8 oz tungsten weights and craws of some sort and beaver style baits and absolutely love it. I replaced my NRX 873 with it and it put the NRX to shame balance wise and sensitivity wise. A Steez balances perfect on it. Just another option if you want a little more length and power.
Re: Phoenix K2 714 blank
Been weight up a few options. If time allows I could definitely use a set comprising of a k2 684, a 715 and a 735.5poundhooker wrote:I use my 736 K2 for the same aplication with mostly 3/8 oz tungsten weights and craws of some sort and beaver style baits and absolutely love it. Is the 736 in your view strong enough for frogging and mat work?5poundhooker wrote:I use my 736 K2 for the same aplication with mostly 3/8 oz tungsten weights and craws of some sort and beaver style baits and absolutely love it. I'm not 5poundhooker but I have the rod and in my opinion yes it is.Martin Lo wrote:Is the 736 in your view strong enough for frogging and mat work?5poundhooker wrote:I use my 736 K2 for the same aplication with mostly 3/8 oz tungsten weights and craws of some sort and beaver style baits and absolutely love it. All good! Keen to try it. Down under we've used the lighter stuff and the feedback has been excellent.SPAZ wrote:I'm not 5poundhooker but I have the rod and in my opinion yes it is.Martin Lo wrote:Is the 736 in your view strong enough for frogging and mat work?5poundhooker wrote:I use my 736 K2 for the same aplication with mostly 3/8 oz tungsten weights and craws of some sort and beaver style baits and absolutely love it.
