Phenix K2s

Post by dusty » Tue Dec 25, 2012 2:08 pm

Gentlemen,

Which k2 blank would be better for midsize tops (dog walkers and poppers) 3/8-5/8 range? The 683ml or 684mh? I've heard these blanks are more moderate-fast rather than fast and about half a power to a power overrated. Not sure which one to roll with since there isn't anywhere to go give them the wiggle test.

I haven't measured the 684. But the 683 came within 10% of the power of these other blanks...

Ok that's the way I was leaning based on power. Just hope the action is slightly less than fast.

the k2's tend to be a "fast" moderate fast or a "slow" fast -- if that makes sense :big grin:

The 7 K2's I've measured all wound up coming in between 60° and 64°.

And for reference, the Loomis CB's and St. Croix moderate action crankbait blanks I've measured all fell within 57° and 62°.

The high 60's is where most fast action rods fall. And extra fast in the low 70's. 75° is the fastest blank I've measured in the 238 blanks in my database.

Thank you all for your input. Sounds like 684 is where it's at for what I want to do.

I've got a 714 and if the 684 is anywhere close in power, you'll want the 4 power. BTW, my 714 is great for hard baits, I really like the action for jerkbaits. Haven't tried it for topwaters, but I'd imagine it'd be gonna be good for those as well.

The sensitivity is fantastic on these K2's...not that that matter with topwaters, but just saying.

it is!! however I do prefer my 713 for pop-x's and smaller tops
714 for jerks and larger topwaters
