Jigs for really TINY fish?

How small is your rod and how light is your line? It's not about the size of your tackle, but how you work it. Come share your Ultralight and Bait Finesse System (BFS) fishing success here!

Jigs for really TINY fish?

Post by ultralight » Tue Jun 15, 2021 7:07 pm

Trout season is over where I am due to heat. But hiking around the lake where I live, I see schools of hundreds of small panfish (3-4"). I thought it would be fun to occasionally go for quantity rather than size. I don't have a clue on where to find jigs small enough for these fish to take. These would chase regular trout sized minijigs but of course, can't actually take the jigs.

I remember seeing, some years ago, videos of fisherman in China who catch these tiny little critters.

Any suggestions as to any jigs small enough? The only thing I found is some very small trout magnet minis...

Check out Chris Stewart’s micro fishing pages at his tenkarabum site. Scroll down the left side of the page to get to the other micro fishing links. Note, they don’t seem to use jigs with this Japanese technique so it may not be what you’re looking for.

What you’re looking for is called Mormyshka. These jigs originate from Russia and are intended for ice fishing, but if you’re looking for tiny, that’s probably the tiniest you could go (in terms of jigs)

Check out Daiwa Kiwami heads (Gekkabijin SW Light SS Extreme) and C'ultiva JH-87 heads. The latter are easier to find.

Bass pro had 1/124th ounce jigs in their fly fishing section. They also used to make their "Squirmin' Grub" in 1 inch size. Dunno if they still have them both.

That was a good cost effective combo for slaying tiny panfish.

Use a fly rod. No matter how small the fly/hook it remains castable because you’re casting the weight of the line not the fly. A 2 wt. rod would be a good place to start.

THANKS all for your replies! (Just checking in.)

Fascinating - such as the Tenkarabum link. I had NO idea that fishing for tiny teeny little fish was a thing. LOL!

I was going to suggest the Keitech jigs, but you are like nano particle jig size...

Ice fishing jigs too. They are compact, small hook and cast like a dream if they are tungsten.
