Revo SX4
Revo SX4
I went ahead and ordered a BFS spool for my Revo SX4 from AliExpress. This was my first time ordering from there and everything has gone smoothly so far. I am still awaiting the Ace Hawk CU DOUBLE NEW 1.8m Lure Fishing Rod Fast Action UL/L to be delivered. My DIY Revo SX4 spool came in the mail today. I put it on my scale and weighed it. Also put it in the reel to give it a spin. Will have to wait for my rod to actually test it out. Will also need to get some line. Here are some pics along with the original spool.

Re: Revo SX4
Now imagine how much of difference there is in the spooled version of each.
Re: Revo SX4
Took this reel fishing with the BFS spool. I put 100 yards of 4# Lew's Mr Crappie line on the spool. I took a custom built spinning rod made from a 7'6" 3wt blank. This is mod/fast blank if I remember. I stared out using a 1/16 ounce Yo-Zuri Snap Bean. It took me a little bit to get used to casting this lite of a lure. I am not the best caster so I need the breaks set higher along with more spool tension. Had them set to where the bait did not fall at all when spool was disengaged. I could not overhead cast without an overrun or backlash. Had to cast sidearm and not put a lot of effort into the cast. Even with these settings I was still able to cast about 40 to 55 feet.
Other lure I used where 2" pin minnows, rebel countdowns, an 1/8 ounce blade bait, 1g spoon, and .8g spoon. The .8g spoon seemed to be a little to lite with the little wind here in Indiana. It was a good first day venturing into the world of BFS. I wish I could say i caught a ton of fish but I only got three. One decent gill and two small bass. I am awaiting The Ace Hawk CU Double to come from China. I do have another one of those fly rod blanks that I may also build into a baitcasting rod.

Re: Revo SX4
Congrats on your first BFS catches. Can't say for sure but I think you'll find the shorter Ace Hawk Double to be easier to cast with. The lighter tip section is rated down to .5 g and that really helps. In my limited BFS experience I find things become difficult when you get near 1 g. Certainly doable but requires more casting skill. Was also going to say a good reel but it seems that a number of the inexpensive Chinese BFS reels are up to the task these days.
Re: Revo SX4
I went ahead and did some digging to find out the exact blank used to build the rod I did my testing with. It was a Pac Bay Traditional T2F793 is a 7'9" 2pc 3wt has a AA of 72 and a ERN of 2.97. It is listed as having a moderate action. I had originally built this rod to use an an extreme ultra light spinning rod. When used as a spinning rod, it seemed to to be more of a noodle and was bent over anytime I hooked a 6" bluegill. It has a lot of flex and bends deep into the blank but I have been able to land a 28" channel cat with this rod. Just have to se a landing net and not use the rod to lift larger fish. Anyway I get to go to the post office to pick up my Ace Hawk CU Double tomorrow since I was not home when the postal service tried to deliver it today.
