I am in the market for two of the New Shimano Vanquish Reels. I am already purchasing the C2500HGS, this is settled.

However, I am building an UL Jig oriented set up. I managed to pick up one of the Olympic Graphiteleader Corto 6102L's and I want to pair it with either a 1000PGSSS or a 2000SSS.


I will be fishing Mountain streams for trout and stillwater for all species. I am pondering wither or not a faster gear ratio might be desirable on the river in order to get a fish landed under swift current conditions.

These come out sometime in March, anyone else thinking about picking one up?

I have an older 2000 Vanquish and the spool is a little wider than the 1000. Should manage line a smidge better I think.

I don’t own a Vanquish. But I do own a 2018 Corto.....and I have it paired with a 1003 Luvias. It is a true finesse setup. The low ratio reel with a jig is a game changer. If you don’t already have an UL setup with a low ratio reel I highly recommend it.

Can’t comment on this these reels but I really enjoyed my Exist when I had my spinning setup.

I think reel retrieve speed and handle length are sometimes more important in practice than given credit for. Slow reels in running water are IMO less useful than quick ones, especially if chasing trout. It's easier to keep up with a drifting lure and pick up slack with a faster reel. Benefits might include less snagging and more fish landed if going with single or barbless hooks. For the sort of retrieves that Alphahawk uses, slow jiggling style, a slower retrieve reel makes sense.

A rule of thumb I use for stillwater is fast reels for lures moved with the rod tip (to maintain lure contact) and slower reels where the reel is used to move the lure. There are exceptions like burning buzzbaits and vibration lures but this is not the norm for a full season.

I'm very careful to check handle lengths and knobs. Like the OP, I really like the C2500 configuration in principle, will likely try it soon. Of the 2 models mentioned, I would go with the C2000SS for use described. PG will be too slow I believe. Personally, I use a C2000HG a lot, I've never found it too fast and handle length is spot on at 45mm. From very slow SPs to trout plugging in still and fast water, it works well.

Your videos are excellent and your video on the Corto 18 sold me. I will take your advice into consideration.

You make some fine points. I too thought about getting something perhaps faster, the 2000HGS version. It would certainly be more versatile set up wise if I wanted to put it on a smaller stream rod, but I already have 3 BFS setups that essentially fulfill the same style of fishing on the river. However, I too thought about getting the 2000HGS so I could also pair it with a 77/TZ Blue Current Stream Special.

Still thinking this one out. I do eventually want a designated low gear ratio reel specifically for UL jigging. I would absolutely purchase a 2000SPG Shimano made one.

Considering I really wanted to build a UL jigging set up with a PG reel, I have decided to go with the 2017 Shimano Soare Ci4+ 2000SSPG. Seems like a heck of a reel for the price.

Did you get C2500HGS, if yes, how do you like it, I'm trying to decide between 2500S and c2500hgs for finesse bass fishing. Looks like c2500 is same body as 2500s with just smaller spool.

I got the Normal 2500HGS, not the C2500 version. I love the reel. It is on a 85/TZ Blue Current Rod, so I felt the larger spool might help with casting. I'll probably be picking up a 2000HGS size soon, I'll drop in to post about it when I do.

I have the older Vanquish C200HGS Limited and nit handles line very nicely. I always use straight flouro with 4lb Sunline Shooter or Seaguar Abrasx without problem. I do have the IOS line roller mod installed.

Still not 100% clear on how JDM Shimano spinning reel sizes work, but I believe the C2000S and C2000SSS spools can be used on the 1000SSSPG model? I am under the impression that the frame is the same, making the 1000 and C2000 spools interchangeable.

Yes, interchangeable.
Pink is 18 Stella
Grey is 19 Vanquish.
Blue is 19 Stradic (i.e. FL)
