Spinning rod with baitcasting reel?

Post by hungry_cow » Wed Feb 06, 2019 10:00 am

I noticed there don't seem to be any baitcasting rods over 6ft long that are true UL with ratings of 1-3 lb line or under 1 gram lure ratings at the low end like many UL spinning rods. What it compromise the rod and put it at a high breaking risk to use an UL spinning rod with a baitcast reel? I know a local Amish rod builder that does amazing work who could put casting guides on instead but then the rod would be upside down from its intended build as you can't really flip the reel seat and I don't know if that would affect the spine of the rod and cause it to break easier even if staying within the rods rated line and lure ratings.

I don't think where the spine is really matters at all. If he can remove all the guides, he can remove the reel seat, too, so you can slap on an ACS or whatever casting seat you want. Course, at that point you might as well just have a custom rod built...
This is the way.

I know of at least one enthusiast who does exactly that - take longer JDM spinning UL rods and rebuild them to UL baitcasting. Really however, it is a lot of work to strip a rod down to rebuild - I've tried that before.

I was actually today just thinking about building a rod that can serve both spinning and baitcasting purposes. Won't be for a while but that is possible. I may look somewhat odd but it will be functional.....:) The only reason to do that is to travel with fewer rods and save the cost of a blank/grip.

Whoah!!! They finally made one. Definitely will have to order one to toy around.

Hopefully it won't feel like a musky rod in weight. :big grin:

I've had one for a couple of years. It isn't super light, but it is surprisingly balanced and nimble. There is a free shipping in February on their site for orders over $50.
