Snaps for UL fishing
Snaps for UL fishing
Hated to start a thread just to ask a simple question, but what size snaps does everyone use for UL cranks or jigheads? I always have liked doing this to protect retying leaders over and over and to maintain their length for casting.
Right now I use Owner All Purpose Snaps #2 sized. I know TW carries them down to #0 and has a #1.5 size, some places like eBay have a #00 size...
What sizes do you run???

I use the smallest decoy egg snaps. They're more of a pain to deal with until you start fishing them and realize they're much less likely to snag algae and whatnot.
This is the way.

Re: Snaps for UL fishing
By far the smallest are the Fast Snaps (Fas Snaps) , but I use ones made by Mustad. Mustad used to make them and they are of thinner wire than Fast Snaps and lower in cost. I'm going to miss them when my Mustad ones run out. These are good to 6 lbs load - overkill plenty for UL fishing.
Even the traditional Owner 00 ones are up to 19 lbs I think which are waaaaay beyond what I need for UL.

I like the Yarie 530 snap in the large size if you don't mind the open design. Pretty much like mustad fly snaps
Re: Snaps for UL fishing
Thanks for all the help, I will probably try the Owner All Purpose #0's for sure, maybe give these other brands a shot too. I am really feeling the BFS fishing right now. Considering selling some older MH/H tackle...
Re: Snaps for UL fishing
Got a bag of 200 of these from Aliexpress for under $10 US shipped. I got the smallest size 000, been fishing them for a while now without issue. To put that size in perspective, a regular pencil eraser is approx 7.5 mm in diameter. These are quite small. The prices some companies charge for a bag of 10 is laughable.

How are you guys opening these tiny snaps? Maybe I am cutting my nails too short but I struggle even with "normal" sized ones.

Fingernails or I have used my Hemos on really cold days where the fingers don’t work as well as I want.Houndfish wrote:How are you guys opening these tiny snaps? Maybe I am cutting my nails too short but I struggle even with "normal" sized ones.

I think I just need better hemostats then, mine are all crappy ones I picked up at various fleamarkets. I use my BFS gear for stocked trout a few times a year and they seem incredibly lure-sensitive and snaps would be a huge help in figuring out what they are biting on any given day.Craigthor wrote:
