He in an inspiration for me.

Not taking anything away from him but, he does use lures that are about 1/4oz. He is still great. Using lures like an X Rap 04 and such make it harder. My favorite part of stream fishing is making sick casts like the video above.

Dang...those rods are even more expensive than I thought. Over 70k yen for a glass rod...YIKES

I wonder, is his Ambassadeur tuned, eg aftermarket spool, or is his reel all stock...

They key is having a rod that bends all the way/slightly overloading it. I find it easiest that way.

I agree. The rod and almost overloading it is important. I am able to do some nifty precision casts and catch my share of trout. Still, that guy is on another level than I am...

At that price wish I could try one before buying. They also make spinning rods as well.

My 'guess'. I've thought that for max casting accuracy, one should have the most feel with loading that more graduately increases and decreases over a large arc for the most feedback to one's nerves so that one knows exactly what the tip/lure is positioned and accelerated. That means in my conjecture:

1. Heavier rig for feel.

a. Heavier rod. Especially towards the tip.

b. Or if the rod is very light, then a heavier lure, as much as the rod is able to handle.

I believe that option (b) is better. However, to of of sufficient mass, the lure will be too heavy for most UL applications so the approach for UL may be to have a heavier rod.

2. Moderate rod action.
The video has both.

However, the problem is that the above are exactly the factors that reduced sensitivity. So for shallow or sight fishing, or fishing such as with trolling, that doesn't matter as the hits are so obvious. With the type of fishing I do - very light jigs, casting as far as possible, in open water where sensing the bit is important, a fast action rod that is as light as possible is more important - sacrificing casting control. That said, there are guys who can still cast amazingly accurate with fast light rods of course. Perhaps not as accurately as with a heavier moderate rod though....

That's why I think my 6'5" ML/RF 3/16-1/2 jerkbait rod is perfect for 1/2oz jerkbaits. Being right at the top of the rating means it gets maximum distance while still being short enough to easily work the bait.

Well atleast I’m not the only one then...

For a glass blank, that thing looks crisp. Surely that's part of the equation.

I've dropped $800 on a production fly rod, so that's not completely out of range for a custom rod. The 1500 series Abu's were always some of the best casting reels I'd ever used (I had five at one time) but they would need some bearing upgrades today. One common denominator in a lot of these videos is lure weight. They use 1/4 oz range minnow plugs and that does dampen the rod's action making it easier (IMO) to cast accurately.
