I've had a big hybrid take a Rapala when I was fishing for trout in a tailwater years ago. It got in the main current and must have taken 80 yards of line out....it did not end well.mhood wrote:Actually, I have a TwinPower 1000 on my SJR 720 IMX and a Laguna 500 on my SJR 6400 IMX. Where I live, you never know when a decent bass will hit and the SJR rods do give you a bit of backbone for those moments. The 500 sized reel on the 6400 IMX is really a sweetly balanced combo and is wonderful to fish with.
USDM 500-size reels

Re: USDM 500-size reels
My current go to ultralight rig when fishing lakes, streams that hold bigger fish. The rod is rated for 2 to 6 pound line, 1/32 to 3/16 oz lures. I run 4 pound mono

Re: USDM 500-size reels
I saw at my local tackle show that for 2018 shimano USA is introducing 500 size Nasci and Sarahas I believe.
having said that, a 1000 Size Stradic Ci4+ should be light enough for just about any UL size rod no?
and you would get the benefits of a 1000 size spool (casts better than a 500 size)

I have a 6400 IMX with a 1000 Stradic FJ on it and it is a little heavy, but I kinda like how butt-heavy it is.mhood wrote: The 500 sized reel on the 6400 IMX is really a sweetly balanced combo and is wonderful to fish with.
It took me a while to come around to the 6400, it's a weird little rod but I really like it now. If I can get something with its exact taper and action, but around 6 foot six, I would buy two of them so I could keep a Ned rig on one and a t-rigged Roboworm on the other.
Re: USDM 500-size reels
Good stuff gents. I've got 6 of the 6400 (The Charlie Brewer in me) and half that many of the 791 TSR GLX (had 5 at one time). I fish for big smallies in remote water that resembles a scene from Deliverance here in WV with trout stream clarity. Good thread.
Houndfish nice "Ned" mention. He's a good friend.

Re: USDM 500-size reels
I am pretty certain Shimano did away with the anti reverse lever option to allow back reeling on many of its reels and the Nasci American release was among them. I personally love Shimano reels but with a 500 size reel, I have to be able to back reel or at least have the option when using 2, 3 and 4lb test. For me that is non negotiable.Hulkster wrote:I saw at my local tackle show that for 2018 shimano USA is introducing 500 size Nasci and Sarahas I believe.

I have a 2017 JDM Sahara 500 with the lever.

I haven't been paying attention, what's the reasoning behind Shimano doing away with the lever?earthworm77 wrote:I am pretty certain Shimano did away with the anti reverse lever option to allow back reeling on many of its reels and the Nasci American release was among them. Re: USDM 500-size reels
I've been playing with the 2000 sized ci4+ ballistics, tatulas, etc for a bit now.
Out of the box i don't think you could go wrong with any of the fancy plastic reels from shim or daiwa.
Pick your poison.
I will say...think the tatula LT is gonna be "the" reel for 2018
It's reallly a nice and simple ultra light weight egg beater that manages light line very well...(just like shimano but cheaper)

Re: USDM 500-size reels
not sure.....less moving parts to repair/replace.....cheaper to make? Maybe they feel their drags are really good and one will not need to back reel.JB in SC wrote:I haven't been paying attention, what's the reasoning behind Shimano doing away with the lever?earthworm77 wrote:I am pretty certain Shimano did away with the anti reverse lever option to allow back reeling on many of its reels and the Nasci American release was among them. Re: USDM 500-size reels
I don't back reel. But removing the lever to switch the anti reverse on or off makes no sense to me. In order to let a small amount of line out, does the bail have to be opened to do so?
