Aldebaran bfs XG 2016 & Braid

Post by JrodTX » Sat Jan 28, 2017 5:55 am

So I've tried google and the search function but can't seem to find out of the spool on my new reel is safe to use braid. My instructions are all in Japanese so the manual is no help. I've heard that braid can dig into some other light spools and want to make sure I'm not going to ruin a $100+ spool. Any users of this reel have experience they'd like to share?

I'm itching to spool this thing up, my Zodias was delivered yesterday.

I've been thinking the same thing, but I found a video online showing it with braid. Probably 20 or 30lb at the most. Since the spool is so shallow, I would put a strip of electrical tape as a backer.

Here's a video on utube. I don't know if this helps or not.

I've heard of spools deforming from braids and monos drying and contracting during storage.

Superlight weight honeycombed BFS type spools are that type that I would personally avoid unless it's purely for BFS style (sticking to that exact form), and after fishing peeling the line off and allowing to dry / contract / relax and then relaying it onto the spool under normal pressure for storage.

I have some 10# suffix 832 from my spinning setup and some 20# invisibraid I've had for a while I wanted to try. It's supposed to be 8lb mono equivalent so it should cast decent and allow for enough line to cast across the creek. I'll try the electrical tape instead of mono for capacity sake.

That would be my fear, deforming a spool. The stock spool is definitely ported, not quite honeycombed as its only ported on half of the spool.

I'm assuming your spool is as pictured.

Stock spools are a little more forgiving than their non OEM counterparts however I wouldn't go mechanically loading (shop style line winder) a spool especially those designed for BFS.

Mind you after reading and viewing on YouTube what US owners of BFS reels use them for just blows me away

I've had 8lb Gliss on mine. No problems after a year

I use mine mainly for panfish though.

I've seen that at a local gander mtn. Heard it's slippery, any issues?

The Gliss line is quiet nice, I use the 8lb stuff on my 1-3 kg spin gear, casts a mile in comparison to any braid. Doesn't hold water and ties well - double uni knot works for me the best. Makes a fantastic braid* for baitcaster reels however going up a line class or two to get a comfortable diameter is key, especially picking out knots.

The 8lb diameter measures up at 0.09 mm thinner than 3 lb FC Shooter FCC which is 0.13 mm.

Great stuff IMHO.

It's great. It doesn't dig in with the shallow spool. I only put about 45 yds on and then add a 2ft leader of 6 or 4lb FC

It's braid safe, Shimano designed support ribbing on the underside of the spool.

Awesome, that's what I wanted to hear.

Next spool I'll try gliss.

Gliss is nice. I run that on my Steez and Spinning setup. Casts farther than anything I've used so far.

It looses color kinda quick but it's very strong for its rating.
