I have seen breem/crappie poles in stores before but I don't know the first thing about them. Are they made for casting or just trolling/dipping?

I have a $5 tenkara rod I got from ebay, it is utter trash but was enough to get me excited about catching the tinyist of fish.

Depends on which one you get . The ones I've been playing with are like modern cane poles , they telescope for easy storage . I would think a nine footer with about 4' line would do good as a micro fishing rod, or put 9-10' line on it for Tenkara.
The Lews one I have is definitely UL . I could see a nice bluegill putting a full bend in it .
I also thought about making one . You can get a graphite UL Rod blank or a 7' flyrod blank for about $30 , add a tip top guide and glue a nice handle on it and you'll have a better Rod than most of the commercial ones out there . Gillchaser

The idea is using a cheaper blank is a cool idea, but I think 7' is the limit of what fits in my car. Part of the lure of tenkara is that the rod, line, and lures all will fit in the water bottle pocket on my pack.
