If I'm not mistaken those have quite a cult following in Japan ... I may have even got that info from this forum at one time.

They actually did a remake of this reel a while back.

I saw one listed on ebay aways back...can't remember who remade it though, ABU or someone else.

Were the clear ones production models or salesman demos?

Clear side covers were usually salesman demos.

Zebco had an entire clear reel for it's 1970 spinning reel.

Some one in Europe was making plastic frames as an experiment though...I can't remember which specific reels. I remember it said that his molds even had the existing screw thread recreated. :o

There has been other stuff that people argue about as to whether it was salesman examples, or after the fact creations.

I believe that Daysprout commissions ABU to make these limited run (1000 piece) reproductions of Cardinal 3/33 reels:

There is also quite an aftermarket -- Avail, Hedgehog, Daysprout and others make custom parts.

Yama Works (http://yamaworks.exblog.jp/) is a custom tuner of ABU Cardinal 3/33 reels, and you can buy pre-tuned versions of the Daysprout reproductions directly through Proshop Otsuka.

Was searching for some early Shimano UL reels other than the MLX line.

Found a Schematic for a Symetre 1000FD dated 1997.

Pictures seem hard to find, though here's some of a Aero Symetre 1000FA:

Here's an odd Daiwa I haven't seen before... must have been a specific rod for it.

Likely part of one of many versions of their travel kits -

Note the little red plastic bail trip - where have we seen that type of bail trip before Image

Here's a Sleeper UL reel, a Garcia Mitchell 314. Like the 308, it can use shallow spools...here equipped with a PUM rather than a bail and 4# Sufix mono on a shallow spool...weighs about 7.5 oz.

It's fairly bullet proof...it also has planamatic gearing like the 308...or you can put a crosswind cam in it if you prefer that line lay style.

Do you have a shallow spool for it?
