Pier Pics 1/7/13 .... Broke in the Presso
Made a short trip to the pier tonight to see what I could manage. The weather did not want to cooperate, if it wasn't sprinkling, the wind picked up to about 15 and was blowing right in my face. Air temp was decent at around 50-55. Managed to land about 10 Trout, ranging from about 8" to a guestimated 14" but lost 5-6 right at the edge of the pier when they spit the hook. The Daiwa Presso fished really nice. Sensitivity was much better than my Quantum Xtralite but not as good as my phenix Recon.... but for what it is, its a very good value. The rotor on my stinson reel isnt completely tight so I need to take it apart to figure that out... Its time to upgrade me thinks. Anyways enough of me rambling, onto the Proof!
And the weapon of choice... 2" Gulp Curly Tail Minnow in Pearl White on a el cheapo 1/16 red Jighead
I really need to find a quality jighead as thats what I blame for the lost fish...

Cool!!
Sounds that your rotor nut is loose...might be able to get a wrench on it after you pull the spool. You'll have more room to work if you crank the spool out as far forward as possible. That drag click gear should slide off the shaft too, though you have to wiggle it. Can't remember if Okuma's have regular or reverse thread on that rotor nut.

two questions for you:
1) How well could you cast that 1/16oz jighead?
2) How does the power stack up against some other UL rods?

send me a PM as well if you know someone making some good quality jig heads in the 1/16, 1/32, 1/64 ounce sizes with good hooks, especially if the price is right..uljersey wrote:I'm on a tablet now, I''ll help you out on jig heads later when I get home from work. Nice fish BTW

Jigheads. Apologies for the hijack, I know this is the Presso thread, but anyhow...
I know the pain of crappy jigheads, so here's my advice. For mass produced, Luck E Strike makes one of the better ones I've found. Made with either Gamakatsu or Eagle Claw hooks, good paint (the eyes are always open) and very good construction (no sloppy castings, etc.) Very sharp out of the pack, and strong to boot.
Custom - I saw a jighead by Spro with a fine wire bait keeper (easier on smaller plastics than a collar)and it was not available in the US, so I found someone to make them for me. They turned out great, although I got them late in the fall and really have not used them yet. I have no doubts they will work fine. I opted for unpainted, I can always powder coat them myself or leave them blank, I really don't think the fish care ...

I was dealing with a decent wind but I could easily get 40 or so feet, but I wasn't trying to cast very far... Just to the edge of the lights. It most definitely is a more powerful rod then my quantum but I have yet to catch something to really test it.basscrusher wrote:two questions for you:

Those 1/16 oz with the sickle look awesome, I use a matzuo sickle for live bait when snapper fishing and it work awesome. Looks like a few with #2 and #4 are in order for my next purchase.
