Biggest Fish You've Caught on UL Tackle
Biggest Fish You've Caught on UL Tackle
I caught all these on a St. Croix PS70ULF2 (2.8oz) paired with a Shimano Sedona 500FD (6.2oz) spooled with 4lb test Trilene XL mono. All fish were caught and released unharmed. I know some off y'all have done better. What's your biggest fish on your lightest tackle?

Re: Biggest Fish You've Caught on UL Tackle
One of the local park lakes is stocked with panfish and channel catfish for the kiddies to enjoy. I was trying for some of the bull bluegill and managed a 15" cat. No scale so weight will be a mystery. This was on my PS60ULF2 and a Sedona 500 with 4# P-Line Fluoroclear. It didn't so much fight as just sink, just like his big riverbound ancestors!
Re: Biggest Fish You've Caught on UL Tackle
Biggest UL fish I've caught is a 20" pike on a 1" Williams Wabler (the last spring i had my Compre UL). However later that year in the fall I had a much larger pike on (mid 30's) on a dink 5' rod, however the pike naturally found the line and got a tooth on it (however I was able to raise it out of 20' feet of water). icenine, I'm pretty sure this year I'm going to have the exact same UL rig as you (rod, reel and line), how have you found the rig in terms of performance?

Re: Biggest Fish You've Caught on UL Tackle
Those are some big fish! Awesome pics.
Garfisher, I love my current UL setup. This winter I switched my line from Trilene XL 4# to Nanofil 2#. The casting distance with that setup is incredible, and the line has been very strong. I've had no break offs and I haven't missed a strike this winter. With the stretch of the mono and the flexibility of the rod I did miss some fish on the hookset before I made the switch in line. I haven't missed a fish since switching to Nano, but I've also been mainly fishing for trout and crappie. I loosened the drag a bit and have had a few trout make the drag sing this winter. I'm interested to see how the line will work for bass. It's heating up down here in VA...so bassin' is just around the corner.

Re: Biggest Fish You've Caught on UL Tackle
Don't have a picture because I was alone in the boat, but I caught a grass carp in May of 2008 that bottomed out my 50lb digital scale. The fish was caught on a St. Croix Avid 7' UL / Shimano Stradic 1000 MgFB combo on 4lb fireline.
I saw a school of these grass carp feeding on ripe mullberrys that were falling in the water from an overhanging branch. I picked up a couple of the berries and stuck one on a bare hook and pitched it under the tree.......the fish took immediately and the water exploded like a tarpon fishing show on TV! Luckily the fish went straight for open water and I was able to chase it down with the motor......otherwise it would have spooled me pretty quick! Fight was maybe 30 minutes before I could net it (at least the portion that fit in the net).

Late June last year in Eagle River Wisconsin, 4 lb pike on 4 pound vanish line.
Took me a good 10 minutes (estimation) to haul him in, Still clueless how my line didnt get sawed off

Re: Biggest Fish You've Caught on UL Tackle
Don't know about the eating, all went back. Only fish C&R, except for a couple of times a year when I might take a Trout or Grayling for the table on the fly.street fish wrote:That's a great carp you caught with the UL gears...Are they good to eat.skinhead wrote:Mmm, there have been a few.

Re: Biggest Fish You've Caught on UL Tackle
This is probably the best one I have gotten on camera, but I've hooked a couple carp on this same setup that were in the 7-10lb range. It's a Sahara 500 with an All Star 5'4" UL rod and 4lb cajun mono

Re: Biggest Fish You've Caught on UL Tackle
No pictures but I have landed a 5 pound brown, 12 pound channel cat, carp up to 10 pounds and a few largemouths up to 5 pounds.
Skinhead, those are impressive catches. That Arpino custom looks pretty sweet, can you tell us a little about that rod?

Re: Biggest Fish You've Caught on UL Tackle
The rod started out at 6', but due to a couple of mishaps is now 5'3". It was built on the lightest tip section of a Drennan Twin Tip Avon blank. Guides are Fuji SiC. Handle is now full EVA with a Fuji DPS reel seat, in the pic's it was cork and cocobolo. Casting weight was in the range of 1/32oz - 3/16oz. The rod isn't used a lot now but I can't get shot of it, it was my first custom UL back in 1996 .Ace wrote:No pictures but I have landed a 5 pound brown, 12 pound channel cat, carp up to 10 pounds and a few largemouths up to 5 pounds.
