Post by donholton » Sun Jul 31, 2011 1:16 pm

I need some advice on which vest to buy for a fishing kayak with a high back seat. Thanks for the help in advance.

I have an Extrasport Breakwater and love it. It fits well even with my very high back Surf2Summit GTS Expedition seat. If you're looking for a truly "fishing" designed one. I've heard great things about the NRS Chinook. A friend of mine switched from extrasport to nrs and says the fit for paddling is phenominal especially under the arms. Also I know a few guys who run the Extrasport Osprey and have been very happy with them.

I'm due for a new one next year and will most likely go with the Chinook.

The MTI Adventureware Solaris F Spec is a great PFD designed with the angler in mind, and only $72 at Hook 1.

That's a good price! Are there any images floating around of how it look from the back?

Sorry for the delayed reply.

Here is the rear view of the Solaris F Spec the F stands for Fishing. It;s a high back PFD that should feel comfortable when sitting in the kayak.

Sorry I'm late to respond to the thread but I would suggest going to the nearest kayak shop and try on every fishing specific PFD they have. There were 3 I was able to try on (at my local store) and the one I thought I wanted just didnt fit quite right so I bought the one that fit best (regardless of cost/bells/whistles). This is why...Go with the one that fits as that's the one you will wear. Uncomfortable PFDs have a tendency to not get worn which ruins the point of them...

just my 2 cents...

BTW, i ended up buy the kokatat bahia tour fishing PFD (I also tried the Stohlquist fisherman and NRS Chinook)

x2! I actually don't have the "fishing" version, but still very comfortable.

I use an Extrasport Osprey, and like it well...must say tho,I wouldn't mind trying a Delta Ranger, but they are pricey and seem a bit hard to come by...

Check out the Kokatat Bahia Tour vest. It has great storage with tie-offs inside each pocket for added security. It also has a pliers holder with bungee strap, a see through spot for fishing licenses, accessory square with 4 cutouts for dive knife/safety cut-away device on the front left things pocket as well as one over the left rear shoulder for an LED safety blinking light. 6 straps around the sides help secure your torso and the shoulder pads have added neoprene for extra comfort. 2 hexagonal reflective strips cover the front and back for safety. A thick high back rest coupled with a thinner lower back pad are for added comfort. 4 front flotation pads (as opposed to 2) help with comfort by conforming more naturally around the body.

NRS Chinook, super comfortable even when using a super high back GTS seat.

I've been using my Sospender inflatable that I use on my boat. Whatever model you choose make sure you wear it, the stats for people hurt in kayaks/canoes is very high.

Have fun.
