Hey, I’ve seen instructions for how to tie my own jigs with components but was wondering does anyone take stuff that already has a skirt with band on it (e.g. a dirty jigs swim jig) and reinforce or replace it with wire/braid/thread? How are you guys doing it?

Yep, everything with a skirt gets a wire reinforcement. I use the same wire I tie jigs with and use the same process, take a 3" long piece, wrap twice around the head/skirt, trist tight, trim and tuck. I really like those tiny Booyah spinnerbait but the skirts one them are awful, learning how to reinforce/replace them is what got me into jig tying.

i love using booyah 1/2 oz spinnerbaits too but its their components that usually fall apart after a few fish...i changed out all the split rings they come with to other ones and they seem to be holding up much longer....the blades tend to come apart and they haven't since....

Close the gaps with gel superglue, then quickly sprinkle baking soda on it. This hardens the superglue instantly, and it's as hard as glass. It can be filed to make it smooth if you want. I do this to all my spinnerbait at the wire bend where the swivel connects, plus the ends of the split rings. A buddy uses this method to repair the carbon fiber blades on his drones. He says it works for many other things, as well, so I tried it....and indeed it does work very well.

Ive been using Coats & Clark Upholstery Thread 137m 150 yard spools for 44 years now. Tying my reg jigs finesse jigs spinnerbaits and buzzbaits and i also added chatterbaits to my list. I started with square rubber when that went away and silicone skirting material and round rubber material became more popular. Ive been using this upholstery thread a very long time it wont break down in water it has a wax coating and you dont need too use glue after its wrap and tied. I use 4 wraps and 3 half hitch knots. Your done and the wraps wont ever slip. Even when tying bucktail or Faux bucktail i use the same wrap and tie with no glue they will not fail. It comes in several different color and is very strong thread.

Yes !!!! And while the 30% sale is going instead of buying lures I buy skirts and materials to tie my jigs.

Anyone have confirmation of what wire they are using to do this?

I did the Coats and Clark search but that is a nylon thread. I'm looking for more of a thin gauge wire.

Find a short length of 12 gauge THHN stranded copper wire. Strip the jacket and cut about 3" off. Use each strand to wrap a skirt. Wrap twice, twist it tightly with needle nose pliers and clip it off, leaving 1/4". Fold that end flat to the bait. I have jigs and spinnerbaits that are on 3 seasons with this tie method.

I've learned once the elastic breaks down, and the skirt falls off, it's a pain in the arse to put a new one on (mainly on spinnerbaits, but also on jigs).

Would rather tie them before the skirt falls off.

This is my latest.. I am using FLAT rubber or silicon I dont know but what I do know it this one came out better than I expected and I sit down on the floor and tie and what christmas shows with the wife... keeps me entertained cause I dont like Christmas shows..

To get the maximum flare in the skirting material wire wont work.
