Poison tail jigs: EWG or round bend?
Poison tail jigs: EWG or round bend?
At a conundrum. Not sure whether to order the above jigs in EWG or round bend. Primary use is use for swimming with paddle type trailers.
Please offer your advice.

I use them as a normal bottom contact jig with the EWG and as a swim jig with the round bend.igl00jx wrote:At a conundrum. Not sure whether to order the above jigs in EWG or round bend. Primary use is use for swimming with paddle type trailers.

Re: Poison tail jigs: EWG or round bend?
Personally I prefer a round bend hook for any/all of my jig fishing if I can get it. Having said that, there are quite a few jigs with an EWG hook that are very well designed and really stick and hold fish. One of my favorite EWG jigs is made by Envision Lures. TT did a review on them years ago.
As almost everything in fishing is hook choice is a personal preference thing and both styles work.

On another note: how will does this jig head fish in wood?

It is actually pretty good, I used to use it in wood until the brush head came out, and I never had any problem with the Mustad 91768 hook. I will say this, I didn't use it in really nasty stuff but it has seen submerged trees and has been walked through limbs and made it out fine and hauled in some nice fish on 30lb braid and 16# copoly but using the 3/8oz and 1/2oz with 4/0 and 5/0 hook. Some don't like that Mustad 91768 but when you hit 4/0 and then 5/0 it is perfect for all but the heaviest cover and unless you are fishing jungles with 65lb braid you should have no trouble. Like I said, I fished it as my wood jig but I also used it on rock, and weeds, I'd have to say it is one of the most universal head designs I ever used. You can swim it too and while you can swim any jig, the ones with that 30 degree hook seem to run true with no side lean and some guys use it just to swim with, I like it and use it.igl00jx wrote:On another note: how will does this jig head fish in wood?

I only ever use ewg for really thick baits. I prefer round bends as I feel I get more positive hooksets due to the bigger "bite".
This includes poison tails.

Thanks smalljaw. Your post and insight have made it harder for me to decide on the jigs to buy.
It's a good problem to have.I've made my decision. Thanks all

Poison tail is the only jig I throw. If you are using it as a swim jig, I would suggest a round bend hook. The ewg's are too light to be thrown into most types of cover. Go 4/0 minimum in my opinion. Best of luck.

+1. I get mine from Siebert Outdoors. Great guy to deal with and awesome quality jigs. Nice price too.Lucky1 wrote:Poison tail is the only jig I throw.
