Spinnerbait size descriptions

Jig it, spin it, buzz it, if it's got a wire or a lead head, it can and will be discussed in here.

Spinnerbait size descriptions

Post by Bob Ellis » Wed Mar 23, 2011 4:06 pm

When looking at rod descriptions I often see them generically described for "small" spinnerbaits or "medium" spinnerbaits, and so on. What sizes are considered small/medium/large etc? Is a small spinnerbait anything up to 1/4oz? Up to 3/8oz? Are 3/8oz and 1/2oz considered medium sized spinnerbaits? My guess is that "large" spinnerbaits start at 3/4oz, those things are monsters.

I know I can't compare rod lure ratings to the spinnerbait package weight as that is typically just the leadhead portion of the lure. I learned that lesson trying to fish a 3/8 ouncer on a light powered Cherrywood rated up to 3/8oz. Sure was a shame to break that pretty red rod.

As it is now I typically just use my stoutest rod, a MH baitcaster, but for reasons stated elsewhere I have been looking around for a spinning rod to throw my preferred 3/8oz Booyahs and Zorros.

Sounds like u are on the right track.

I would say 5/16oz and less would be small.
3/8 and to 3/4 is medium
and 13/16 and up are large.

Just my .02$

X2. I have one rod for small spinnerbaits and one for medium spinnerbaits. I don't usually use spinnerbaits over 3/4oz and would not throw a spinnerbait on a spinning rod. How did you break a rod throwing a 3/8 oz spinnerbait ?

It's easy, a Booyah "3/8oz" Glow Blade tips the scales at a hefty 11/16oz.
